Celebrating 70 Years of Bristows

Anyone who was a teenager in the ’80s or ’90s will recognise the iconic Bristows – a British hair brand, manufacturing its products in the country since its establishment in 1954.  From its inception, Bristows has been all about providing outstanding hair care and styling at affordable prices and over the brand’s 70-year history, it has delivered on its mission.  Warpaint wishes Bristows a very happy 70th.  Read on to learn about its journey and how the brand has evolved over seven decades. 

In its early days, Bristows was renowned for its Lanolin Shampoo.  The soothing, anti-inflammatory properties of lanolin brought a sheen to parched hair and scalps, making the product a best seller throughout the 1950s and ‘60s.   

Over the years since, Bristows has expanded its product range to include mousses, hairsprays and dry shampoos, as well as several limited-edition collections including a setting lotion and products for silver hair.  As the brand evolved with hair trends and consumer demands, dry shampoos in particular have become a staple part of the brand and its latest edition, the Sol Fiesta Dry Shampoo, is perfect for summer with pistachio and salted caramel fragrance.   

Today, as part of Bristows commitment to affordability and accessibility, the products can be found on Amazon and in discount stores, such as Savers, for low prices.  The range starts at £1.49 and is clearly as popular as ever, selling around 2.2 million products in the past year, or around 13 units every minute.  Bristows’ top sellers have always been their hairsprays, with the extra firm edition hailing as number one.  Just this year the Extra Firm Hairspray won Best Hair Spray in the 2004 Woman & Home Hair Awards.  At just £1.69, the Bristows Hairspray was the best value hair hero to have won an award in the whole styling category and was described by the judges as “a bargain buy that tames flyaways and gives hair long-lasting hold”. 

Bristow’s Hairspray is also a fave with celebrity hairstylists such as Desmond Grundy.  When commenting on the brand, Grundy says, “My favourite product from the Bristows range is the Extra Firm Hold Hairspray.  It’s so versatile.  I use it for styling, blow-drying, tonging, up-dos, ponytails, buns.  It’s a really fine mist and not sticky at all, so it’s easy to use and gives a really natural look and feel on the hair.   

For decades, Bristows has been known for its vibrant pink design and in 2023 the brand enjoyed its biggest brand refresh in more than ten years.  We wish them success for the next 70 years!
