With Spring arriving in all her glory along with warmer weather, I am delighted to be back sharing my beauty secrets with you.  Now is the time to start preparing for the year ahead with my tips, to help with glowing, healthy skin using both expensive and cost-effective treatments, alongside good, essential skin care products which I will recommend from my many years of experience.

The beginning of March was a significant month with the annual Professional Beauty Awards taking place.  I was delighted to attend again with the founder of Amanda Caroline skincare and to be acknowledged and placed in the top finalists in this year’s Mobile Beauty Business awards.  This is the most prestigious and established awards scheme, recognising different areas in the beauty business from hair and nails to mobile spa treatments.  It appreciates and applauds talent in our industry, lifting profiles which lead to new business opportunities and clients.  It also allows us to meet up with old friends whilst enjoying all the glamour and excitement.  Huge congratulations to our winner and incredible therapist Hayley Snishko of Home Sanctuary.

Beauty Shows

I feel very privileged to have worked for around 30 years in the beauty arena and started out in my early 20s promoting brands and beauty aids at some high profile and wonderful exhibitions.  I had some presenting experience from dipping in and out of TV jobs and, even today, I feel totally at home with a microphone in my hand, talking about beauty and today’s innovative and quite incredible non-invasive treatments that we all love to showcase.  I particularly enjoyed working at the beauty exhibitions for the amazing award-winning, pioneering permanent makeup and microblading artist Karen Betts who is an expert in her field and a joy to work for.  The buzz, excitement and energy at these shows is infectious and makes me feel immensely proud to be part of such a great industry.

Spring Skincare

Now let’s talk about spring and the start of (hopefully) sunshine days with ideas for your kit for those outside shoots which we all enjoy being involved in.  I love cleansers that are mild, soothing and include nourishing oils such as Macadamia Oil which is rich in essential fatty acids.  Using a hydrating mask once or twice weekly will leave skin feeling healthy with a satisfying glow.  Exfoliating with an acid wash that contains Azelaic Acid, known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, is also good for our skin.  This will help calm red-looking skin, although it is best to avoid exfoliants during a rosacea flare-up and please keep beauty products simple for these clients’ skin, especially avoiding scented products no matter how tempting they may appear!

Mild exfoliation should be an essential part of your weekly skincare regime, topping this off with hydration and oil products.  A great skin hydration product is HYPO 21 (from £52.99) – this is a HOCI formulation that is super gentle and purifies whilst helping the skin.  It’s a super-light, water spray and is suitable for all skin types.  Spritz over face and top with an oil-based product such as Kobo Gold Drop Face Oil which I love, as it’s ultra-light and perfect for a pre-makeup face massage.  This water spray and oil technique will help the skin retain moisture and prevent trans epidermal water loss known as TEWL.  Through putting a little bit of time and effort into your preparation regime, you’ll notice the difference when makeup is applied, and the skin literally  glows.  Now let me explain a little about the science behind this.  The moisturisation of the epidermis relates to the lipid and water content known as the NBF (natural barrier function) with many skin disorders starting here, with the imbalance of hydrolipidic content (water and oil) which is vital for happy and functioning skin.  The NBF prevents trans epidermal water loss known as (TEWL) which causes the skin to become dehydrated and can result in the PH levels changing leading to infection and irritated, sensitised skin which can end up with premature ageing.

A really great SPF I recommend to clients with skin sensitives such as red and irritated skin is Rosalique priced at around £29.99.  This light green cream that turns into a hint of a tint will help balance the redness when applied and is developed especially for hypersensitive and redness-prone skin.  It also makes a great primer, with the added SPF benefit, so is ideal for outside location shoots.  An alternative product that is available in 11 skin shades which I use in the clinic is DermaPen Recover Cover.  This high coverage cream is formulated with medicating activities which help cool and hydrate the skin and will calm irritation too.

Let’s not forget that great skin starts from within.  My go-to collagen supplement is Willpowders Collagen Peptides by incredibly talented health and wellness expert, Davinia Taylor.  It works beautifully, is unflavoured and odourless, and helps to keep skin full of volume and in top notch condition.

I was recently introduced to the Studio 10 Make up range that has a simple and quick four-step routine – prime, perfect, shade and shape – I found the staying power incredible on my perimenopausal skin, being 51 years young.  In menopause, skin can lose its ability to hold water, so skin can get quite lipid dry.  This can be especially noticeable when the air is dry inside a photographic studio.

For an emergency super lipid, dry skin quick fix situation, I recommend CosMedix Rescue Balm (£64) , which is an intense Hydrating Balm and Mask that helps rapidly relieve extremely dry, cracked, or chapped skin.  This dramatically soothes, nourishes and comforts the skin leaving a radiant, healthy-looking glow.

I hope you have enjoyed reading a little about me and I sincerely hope that you will try my recommendations.  You know what they say – “The best brands and products are always endorsed by the most caring and knowledgeable consultants.”  With this in mind, have a great and happy few weeks until I share more beauty tips and secrets.
