Professional Beauty & Hair Ireland 2024 – Makeup Competition

April 3rd, 2024

April 3rd, 2024

With the return of Professional Beauty & Hair to Ireland comes the return of our makeup competition, this year hosted by our Editorial Director, Emma Rutherford, and Ireland’s own internationally acclaimed Makeup Artist James Mac.  The show, which is Ireland’s leading event for Beauty and Hair Professionals, is taking place once again at RDS Dublin, with the competition running across both days.  As always, the makeup competition is open to both students and professionals across six different categories, with one held online and the other five on the show floor.  The deadline for entrants to any of the in-person categories is 10am on Thursday 18th April (register here) and the deadline for the online competition is 10am Wednesday 10th April.

Professionals: Sunday 21st April, 10:00-14:00

Students: Sunday 21st April, 10:00-13:00

PB Ireland 24 Bodypaint

This year’s theme for both student and professional entrants to the Bodypainting category is Irish Folklore.  Artists are required to take inspiration from the vast repertoire of Irish Folklore which spans back to the prehistoric era.  From fairies, banshees and leprechauns to mythological creatures, there are endless opportunities to impress our judges with.  Students are required to paint only the upper body with accompanying headpieces and lower-body costumes, while professionals are required topping the whole body.

Professionals: Sunday 21st April, 10:30-12:30

Students: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

For the competition’s Bridal Category the theme is ‘Romantic Glamour’, requiring entrants to bring this romantic glamour to your bride’s big day.  Whether this is enhancing the natural beauty or following heritage and traditional dress, the brief is to create a look that will entrance even the most demanding of brides.  In addition to a flawless face, the bride’s hair, nails and styling must be thought out and look stunning from both a distance and up-close.

Professionals: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

Students: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

Taking you on a trip to the world of Targaryen, the brief for the Character Category is to deism and make-up a character inspired by the hit TV show, House of the Dragon.  It is important that entrants to this category bring to life a new, inspired creation, not a copy of an existing character from the show.  Entrants are encouraged to show case their skills not only through their preparation and design, but also through thoughtful use of hair pieces, costume styling and any prosthetic pieces they wish to add.

Creative Front Cover

Professionals: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

Students: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

For those participating in the Creative Front Cover category, the task is to create and bing to life a creative look inspired by the season of Easter and worthy of a front cover.  Impress the judges with an eye for colour and creativity, attention to detail and showcase your skill and application techniques.  From makeup to hair, the overall look must withstand the closest of scrutiny from our judges whilst still maintaining an overall cohesive look.

Professionals: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

Students: Monday 22nd April, 10:30-12:30

John Galliano has been named British Designer of the Year four times since he burst on the scene in 1984.  His designs for numerous labels, including Givenchy, Dior and Maison Margiela, as well as his own eponymous brand, should provide a wealth of resources from which entrants can take inspiration from.

Insta Makeup

For our online-only, Insta Makeup category we have chosen the theme of ‘A Touch of Red’.  With the pop of red styling trend still going strong in all aspects of fashion and design at the moment, we invited entrants to create up to three on-theme images to promote their own Instagram makeup pages and demonstrate their skills as an artist.  This category is open to both students and professionals with an award for the winner in each subcategory.  Plan the overall look to include hair, makeup and clothing, choosing between head and shoulders or full length images for the final shots.  As well as being judged by our panel of experts, your image will automatically entered into the online public vote where the photo that is the most popular will win the Voters’ Choice Award.  A short step-by-step video, reel or set of images of you creating your entries will be required as proof of authenticity.  Please enter by submitting your images digitally to before 10am on Wednesday April 10th.

Rising Star Award

For Professional Beauty & Hair Ireland we are bringing back our Rising Star Award which will be given to the student which achieves the highest score in any of the categories across the weekend.  We aim to give recognition to those exceptional students who demonstrate their skills and techniques in application, research and design, preparation, professionalism and model care, alongside the other marking criteria.  The Rising Star Award will be awarded alongside the winners of the other categories at the end of Monday.
