Industry News

Congratulations to Jasmine Wicks-Stephens, Brighton-based founder of Faace skincare, who last night (Thursday 15th February) nervously entered BBC1s Dragon’s Den, and stepped out with all three male dragons having invested in her ethical skincare brand. Steven Bartlett was the first to make an offer and he was shortly joined by Peter Jones and Touker Suleyman, as the self-proclaimed ‘three musketeers’ pledged to support the hormonal based skincare line in its next steps.

Jasmine says, “I applied for the Den knowing what a great platform it would give to my female founded, independent brand. Female entrepreneurs are typically less likely than men to get investment for their ventures, but I was intrigued to see if that rang true in the Den, where it’s a slightly more male predominant zone. I secretly wanted Deborah Meaden to invest, but was thrilled to win the support of all three male Dragons. Steven Bartlett, who has built such an impressive following and Peter Jones and Touker Suleyman who are so established in business, are a dream team.”

Faace’s vegan skincare is loved by celebs and the press, has won 13 awards (such as Elle and Cosmopolitan), is available in retailers like Selfridges and QVC, and gives back to support period poverty organisation Hey Girls and The Menopause Charity with purchases.

The latest quarterly State of the Industry survey from the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) shows that the recovery of the sector has been slow and steady through 2023 and into January 2024. Resilient sector businesses are still under pressure from sticky inflation, high winter energy costs, rising wage costs in April 2024 and the lack of availability of experienced staff to grow their business.

Whilst the sector continues to make a slow and steady recovery, there has been a slight rise in businesses making a loss which is up 6% from September 2023, with 20% of businesses now reporting losses and 40% of businesses making a small or good profit – down 5% from September last year. The trend towards increasing prices continued to slow with 39% of businesses doing so over the previous three months, down from 55% in September 2023.A further 64% of businesses will raise their prices over the next three months.

Reliance on external support remains high but is stable, with over half of businesses (58% up slightly from 56%) partially or completely reliant on Government support.  The full report is available on the nhbf website.

Schwan Cosmetics, European colour cosmetics manufacturer and supplier to many of the world’s biggest beauty brands, launched its new skincare-infused vegan Glowy Blur Stick at the MakeUp in LosAngeles beauty industry exhibition this week.  Designed as both a concealer and highlighter, the new Glow Stick evens out the skin tone, adding a natural, dewy look for a luminous, healthy complexion. Its formulation includes hydrasalinol, ginger, sea asparagus, meadowfoam seed oil and many more moisturising and skin-protecting ingredients.

The product comes in response to industry reports that 70% of consumers want to see more active skincare ingredients in colour cosmetics, along with the increasing trend for multi-purpose makeup. The product is one expression of the company’s wider Color & Care strategy, delivering the latest trending looks while offering makeup wearers skincare benefits from scientifically proven care ingredients in face, lips, eyes, and brow products.
