Industry News

The EU Commission has passed new legislation banning the use of microplastics in cosmetics and household goods. The news comes after Weleda and other leading sustainable beauty and household brands signed an open letter to the EU Commission calling for tighter laws and a change in policy against the use of microplastics. The law came into effect this week and will be published in the Official Journal of the EU in August; however, some sectors will be allowed a longer transition period to ensure the new legislation is implemented successfully (e.g. Makeup brands – up to 12 years).

Dr Bernhard Irrgang, Head of R&D at Weleda, says: “Weleda is incredibly pleased with the outcome of this year’s open letter, which is certainly a step in the right direction in the fight against microplastics. We believe that this collaborative industry wide impact is exactly what we need to do to bring about meaningful change. Weleda proves that products without microplastics have always been possible, and we hope this progress encourages other brands to follow our lead. I look forward to seeing wider plastic-free formulations and innovations brands bring to the table as we come together to continue the fight against microplastics”.
