If you’re looking for a new look this season the easiest, and least dramatic, option you can make is with your brows. A different shape could accentuate those defined cheekbones you never knew you had, or give you that cat eye look you’ve always wanted. Keeping Brows on Fleek
We asked Brow Expert and CEO of Rubis Tweezers, Fides Baldesberger to highlight the 3 biggest brow trends for AW23.
- Cat Curve Brows
We’ve seen a lot of different variations of the skinny brow, and the Cat Curve Brows is an updated 90’s nostalgia but more accessible that is more focused on creating the perfect arch resulting in the impression of a natural cat eye look. Cat Curve Brows combine the angle of a straight brow with the skinny brow, and the best way to achieve it is by first drawing the outline of the cat curve brow you want, I would recommend drawing it with a white eyeliner pencil/eyeshadow so you can perfect the shape. You can then pluck the hairs that fall out of this outline. Fides recommends hiding the hairs that fall out of your cat curve brow outline with a concealer covered spoolie and see how it feels for a few days if you’re unsure on whether the look would suit you.
- Scandi Brows
Thick, fluffy brows never go out of style, and the Scandi Brows (influenced by Matilda Djerf) are straight brows taken to new heights. They’re outgrown, “unruly” brow hairs that have been brushed or laminated upwards, in a straight eyebrow shape that gives a more lifted eye effect as it tapers even more towards your temples. Fides recommends using a brow serum daily to ensure healthy strong brow hairs that can hold the height of this look.
- Reverse Ombre Brow
It’s the return of the Instagram circa 2017 Ombre Brows, but with a twist. Instead of filling in the tails of the brow more and lightening up when filling in the front, you’re starting darker at the front and trailing off at the tail. Fill in brows with a powder for a more airbrushed look. Fides’ top tip is to not use a shade that is too dark as this can give a very overwhelming brow that can make the face look sullen and give a blocky brow effect.
We also asked Ruth Aktins, Lash & Brow Expert and Salon System Educator for what brow technicians are being asked for this year.
Some trends are continuing, the laminated brow continues to be popular. However rather than lifting them to their full capacity, I now see brow technicians laminating within precise borders, keeping a well-groomed brow super streamlined and neatly placed by micro lining and mapping during the treatment, says Ruth. This, alongside a precise brow tint with maximum skin stainage, ensures a full, filled in powder brow will be achieved but it will have a neater appearance rather than looking bushy and unkempt. Brows are thinner than the looks we were seeing in 2022, but not 80’s thin!
- Embellished Brows
Inspired from NYFW – nights out take on elements of an embellished brow. Glitters, sequins, embossed crystals can easily be applied with a strip lash glue. Think make-up artists finishing a party make-up look with an added bit of brow bling.
- Skin Tinting
Tinting the skin when doing a brow tint application is much bigger this year than ever before. Time stretched clients are going for longer lasting results in the salon – helping them achieve a semi-permanent make-up look without the need of needles.
- Custom Colour Tinting
Ruth sees custom colour tinted brows coming into their own in 2023. No longer do brows need to be 50 shades of brown, but reds, chestnut, and graphites could be added for extra warmth or coolness. The brow techs of 2023 will be investing in tinting ranges with a good colour pallet – like the RefectoCil range – and offering ‘brow treatments’ rather than just a brow tint.
Lastly we asked Kintija Belska, International Brow Expert and Co-Founder of Everlasting Brows, the most important question: how best to anti-age eyebrows for a more youthful look. Here’s her advice.
Highlight Your Brow Bone
A simple and quick trick that can work wonders for everyone is applying a touch of highlighter, just below your brows to accentuate the brow bone. The transformation is truly remarkable as it instantly lifts the brows, giving your eyes a brighter and more captivating look. Don’t underestimate the power of this effortless step for achieving beautifully lifted brows and enhancing your overall facial appearance. My favourite product to achieve this look is Everlasting Brows Highlighter & Concealer Duo, (£7.95).
Enhance Your Eyebrow Shape
As you age, it is crucial to maintain well-shaped eyebrows that complement your face. Consult with a professional Brow Artist who can analyse your facial features to help you achieve a flattering eyebrow shape. Avoid over-plucking or creating overly thin brows, as fuller brows tend to be more youthful- looking.
Add Definition
Over time, eyebrows may become sparser, losing their density and definition. Use a brow pencil that matches your natural hair colour to fill in any sparse areas. Apply the brow pencil using gentle strokes to mimic the appearance of real hair, creating a fuller and more youthful look.
Lift The Brow Arch
As we age, the skin around the eyebrows may start to droop, making the eyes look tired. Use a setting or brow wax, such as the Elleebana Elleefix Brow Styling Wax (£19.95) to brush the eyebrow hairs upward, creating the illusion of a lifted brow arch. This technique can help open up the eyes and give a more youthful appearance.
Hydrate and Nourish
Condition your brows on a daily basis for healthy skin and brow hair growth. Brow dandruff and flaky skin are becoming increasingly common, however this can easily be avoided with a good daily brow care regime. Moisturise your brow area just like you would rest of your face with a nourishing brow treatment, such as the Elleebana Elleeplex Hyaluronic Boost Serum (£24.50) this 100% pure and soothing serum helps prevent dehydration of the skin and hair to make it supple again. Apply it to your brow area before applying makeup or apply it as a brow mask before bed to give your brows some much needed TLC.
Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
Ensuring your eyebrows are shielded from the sun is crucial to avoid premature aging. While it’s common knowledge that UV rays can lighten hair, making brows less visible, what’s less known is that these rays can also harm the proteins in brow hair, leading to brittle, dry, and thinner eyebrows. Any sunscreen applied directly on brows will help prevent this.
Microblading
If you have sparse eyebrows and are looking for a longer-term solution, you could opt for a professional treatment, such as Microblading, which can completely transform the appearance of your eyebrows. Microblading is the manual process of introducing semi-permanent makeup, in the form of coloured pigments, to mimic hair on the eyebrows, giving defined, fuller and natural looking eyebrows.
Brow Tints
Regular brow tinting can help make brows look fuller and brighter, enhancing your overall appearance. Kintija recommends getting your brows tinted every 3 weeks at a reputable salon that specialises in brow services. This ensures your eyebrows will always look their best, regardless of your age.
Brow Lamination
Staying up-to-date with brow trends can have a transformative effect, making your eyebrows appear more youthful and vibrant. Among these trends, brow lamination stands out not only as a passing fad, but as a valuable service that beautifully grooms natural brows, particularly beneficial for those experiencing unruliness due to ageing. This procedure sets your brows into a youthful shape that perfectly complements your face, while also lifting them upwards, resulting in a refreshed and awakened look.
Remember, everyone’s eyebrows are unique, so embrace and work with the natural shape and characteristics of your brows to achieve the best results.
