With the sun starting to appear (for a short while anyway) and a heatwave allegedly around the corner, it could be time to rethink your makeup look. We roundup the trends hitting social media and the red carpet. Think 90s frosted shimmer, glazed lips, Barbiecore and Mermaid vibes coming through after big film releases, and lightweight grunge if you want something a little grittier.
Underpainting
The biggest trend at the moment is underpainting, popularised by celeb MUA Mary Phillips. It involves painting on contour and blush before applying foundation, giving a natural, contoured appearance.
It went viral on TikTok with Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber showing their blended looks. It is likely this look will last all summer as you can achieve a seamless, sculpted summer glow without looking as though you are wearing lots of makeup. Try Fenty Beauty’s Match Stix Matte Contour Skinstick, Milk Makeup Sculpt Cream Contour Stick or Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Sun-Kissed Glow Bronzer.
Sheer-bold blush
Sheer and bold aren’t two words that should work together, but the sheer-bold blush trend shows they can work in harmony. Blush is going big, but to keep it feeling fresh, we’re seeing sheerer formulas for summer. Liquid versions are ideal for this look, including Vieve Sunset Blush Balm, Iconic London Sheer Blush and Charlotte Tilbury Matte Beauty Blush Wand.
Cream Products
Healthy flushed cheeks are definitely a summer must have. Cream-based products are having a moment, especially for the spring/summer months. Iconic MUYA Pati Dubroff gave the internet a full run down of what she used to create Sofia Richie Grainge’s stunning wedding makeup which included lots of cream stick bronzers and blushers to achieve the ultimate fresh, clean glowy skin. Blend your cream blusher up towards your temples for a sunkissed and sculpted effect. Try Nudestix Nudies Matte All Over Blush or Jones Road Miracle Balm.
Disco makeup
Embellishments and shimmer were a massive summer fashion trend on runways, but they’ll also be adorning faces too, à la a night at Studio 54. More is more here, so don’t be afraid to try an all-over monochrome look then still stick on some face gems and a little glitter on your lips and cheekbones.
‘90s frosted shimmer
We’ve brought back ‘90s lip liner, ’90s grunge and we even keep seeing skinny eyebrows everywhere. So it was only a matter of time before we mined the archive further and resurrected the frosted lips and eyeshadows that Pamela Anderson and Brandy made famous way back when. The pretty trend leans into the silky balletcore beauty moment that TikTok is currently loving and it’s just plain stunning for spring and summer. Try Pat McGrath Lust Gloss, Fenty Diamond Milk Gloss Bomb and Urban Decay Mono Moondust Eyeshadows.
Barbiecore
Barbiecore beauty is one to watch too, and it’s bringing with it hot pink nail polish, fluffed-up lashes, glitter accents and pink statement lips. With Margot Robbie’s live action Barbie movie out in just a few weeks, searches for the “Barbie ponytail” up by 30% and Viva Magenta named the pantone of the year, it’s clear Barbie fever is about to peak in 2023.
Lightweight grunge
One makeup trend that’s not going anywhere is grunge – but made spring-summer appropriate. Rather than full matte foundations, thick liquid lipsticks and heavy smoky eyes, the glam grunge aesthetic is getting a lightweight update with semi-matte complexions or tinted moisturisers. Lip stains sub in for lipsticks (for all of the impact without the weight) and pantyhose smoky eyes offer up a sheer, gauzy take on the classic smoky eye. Try Kiko Milano Long Lasting Colour Lip Markers and Charlotte Tilbury The Sophisticate Luxury Palette.
Glazed lips
The ‘lip oil’ hashtag on TikTok has 1.2 billion views and “Dior lip oil” has over 650 million views all on its own, so it’s probably no surprise that glazed lips are one of spring-summer’s most popular trend – because no season works with a glossy wash of colour more perfectly than the sunshine seasons to really set off that glassy shine.
Two-tone lips for 2023
A basic bright lip? That’s so 2022. Instead, try a two-tone lip like the models at D-Squared2 for the summer 2023 runway. You can opt for contrasting shades on the top and bottom lip, or get a little creative with some lip art by drawing an outline around your lips in one colour, then filling it all in with another. The trick here is to choose a liquid lipstick (in two shades) that dries down quickly. Swipe on one shade, wait for it to dry, then swipe on the second and wait for it to dry before letting your lips touch. Tedious, but you’ll get full, bright pigment that doesn’t bleed or feather.
Colourpop
It’s all about the bold and bright makeup colours. Make a statement by adding a pop of colour to your everyday makeup. Choose gorgeous red lip or create a bold coloured eyeshadow. Team it with a more natural base to make it feel more wearable but feel a little more exciting. Coloured mascara is a really cute and chic way of adding colour to your look with minimal effort.
One easy switch to instantly add a cool refresh is to swap out your regular black liner for a colourful alternative. Expect to see more pastels and neons sketched across lash lines, or full-out bright colour pop eyeshadows. It’s a statement, but paired with more minimal, everyday makeup look, it can feel low-key and infinitely wearable.
Try Glisten Cosmetics Spectra Lash Mascara, Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint Longwear Fluid Lip Colour, Stila Stay All Day Dual-Ended Liquid Eye Liner, Barry M Hi Vis Liquid Neon Eyeliner or Lottie London Colour Cloud Longwear Matte Liquid Eyeshadow.
Pink and Yellow
Combing both colour pop and Barbiecore, pink and yellow are set to be big news. Victoria Beckham Beauty Eye Wear in Sunflower and Macaron are the perfect pink and yellow shades—worn as liner or blended for a more smokey look. Simone Ashley is rocking the pink eyeliner on insta.
For a more subtle take on the trend, try a softly smoked out wash of colour. Try Victoria Beckham Beauty Eyewear in Sunflower, Beauty Bay Pastel Crayon Eyeliner Trio 01 or Pat McGrath Limited Edition MTHRSHP Sublime Eyeshadow Palette in Rose Decadence.
