United Makeup Artists Expo (UMAE) is taking place this weekend and, along with our in person makeup competition, educators and specialist retailers, there is a packed education programme each day across two rooms. With all aspects of makeup, bodypaint and prosthetics covered, there really is something for everyone.
10:00-10:45 – Room 1: Blood, Gore and Medical Special Effects with Hayley Young
Hayley will discuss special effects for the medical side and casualty simulation work. There will be lots of opportunities to ask Hayley questions while she demos with some blood
Hayley always wanted to work as a MUA. Since graduating from university in 2009, she has worked in film, television and theatre including well know television series and the West End. She also has a passion for casualty simulation, working with the military, NHS and emergency services assisting with medical training both in the UK and internationally. She will be sharing more information about her experiences in this field of work. Hayley loves sharing her knowledge as an educator and teaches at The East Coast School of Media, Grimsby.
10:30-11:15 – Room 2: Synthetic fibre and wigs in the UK market with John Asson
John will talk about the conception of How’s Your Head Wigs, about synthetic fibres and their designs. He will also talk about the brand’s core shades and share the secrets of their stunning ombre effects.
11:00-11:45 – Room 1: Marshall Julius in conversation
Emma Rutherford, Publisher & Editorial Director of Warpaint Magazine and Warpaint Extra, will be talking to film critic, blogger, broadcaster and author Marshall about his latest book, Masters of Make-up Effects
A lively, affectionate and candid oral history of iconic make-up effects, from the artists who create and apply them, to the actors who bring them to life, written with Oscar-winning make-up effects artist Howard Berger. A must read for any SFX professional, student or enthusiast.
11:30-12:15 – Room 2: Skincare with Tracy Whittaker & Beverley Braisdell
Tracy and Beverley will be talking about why skincare and skin preparation is vital to ensure there’s a clean, smoother, more hydrated, bespoke blank canvas underneath prior to the application of make-up.
12:00-12:45 – Room 1: Bodypainting Design Concepts with Samantha Helen
Sam will be demonstrating some quick and fun face and bodypainting design concepts. She will show you how to incorporate techniques and paper elements to make your pieces pop on camera. Learn the skills to adapt to the pressure of time you have on set with her time-saving techniques.
An eye for the weird and wonderful, Samantha Helen is best known for her illusion body art and creative looks. Although self-taught, Sam has absorbed her skills and knowledge through her background of art, textiles and photography. Transferring skill sets over from each subject, she enjoys rustling up all sorts of creative chaos. Samantha has worked for MAC Cosmetics, and collaborarted with large brands on social media, including Coca Cola, The Gypsy Shrine and Pretty Little Things. She has also worked with world-renowned photographer Rankin as the makeup designer for Rolls Royce and their “Spirit of Ecstasy” campaign. Samantha runs masterclasses for colleges and universities and has developed her own body paint brand Essentials by Samantha Helen.
12:30-13:15 – Room 2: Understanding what to do after you leave education with Paul Thompson
Paul will discuss how to use what you have learned to build your career and move forward towards getting a job.
Paul Thompson is Director of Education for Makeup Designory (MUD), a centre for higher learning in the field of makeup education. In two centres in the US – LA and NY – MUD are taking their version of excellence further with outreach and locations around the world.
Paul is himself a professional make-up artist with 24 years of experience, as well as an educator with 18 years of experience and author. He founded Creature Creations, a special makeup effects company specializing in television, commercial and theme park projects. He has also worked as an educator for major cosmetic companies around the world, including MAC Cosmetics, Max Factor and Kryolan.
13:00-13:45 – Room 1: Bodypainting Demo by Angela Youngs
Angela will be demonstrating speedy handpainted art and adding texture with stencils.
Angela Youngs, aka @middleagedmaker, has been face painting for approximately fifteen years. A multi-award winning painter, she has painted both in the UK and abroad. She is professional, prompt and has a sense of fun. She is passionate about her job and teaches in several colleges, inspiring other artists. Various clients include: The BRITS, IKEA, Floating Festivals, Tough Mudder, Lidl Mudder, Burger King and Snazaroo. She was recently crowned the 2022 Face Champion at the Helsinki SFX Makeup Competition.
13:30-14:15 – Room 2: Full Head Life Cast Demo with Helen Louka
Helen Louka, in house artist and technician for Mouldlife, along with her colleague John will be showcasing a full head life cast, detailing everything you need to know: from hair wrapping, facial hair, silicone application and alginate
14:00-14:45 – Room 1: Warpaint Extra Makeup Competition Results and Award Ceremony
Hosted by Emma Rutherford, the winners in each category of the makeup competition will be announced, along with the winner of the College Cup
14:30-15:15 – Room 2: Working Together – Academics and Technicians with Tanya Noor and Franky Lehmeier
Tanya and Frankie will discuss the working relationship between Academics and Technicians in education. You will have the opportunity to chat freely about those difficult questions you have always wanted to put forward but haven’t had the confidence to ask.
Tanya trained at London College of Fashion (LCF) and has been a MUA for around 30 years. She has worked in all areas of the industry including: TV, Film, Theatre and Fashion as well as teaching. She was head of the make-up department at Phantom of the Opera (the brilliant original London production) for over 20 years and was also part of the main make up team for the Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies for London 2012. She has worked on many other live events including: Fashion Rocks, The Brits, The Royal Variety Performance, Comic Relief and the Olivier Awards and Most recently for TV & film on The Crown, The Great, Mission Impossible and James Bond. Tanya is deputy course leader at LCF on the BA Hons Degree course in Hair, Make Up and Prosthetics For Performance.
Franky has been teaching at the University of the Arts London for over 15 years, as a Specialist Teaching & Learning Technician, at Degree Level. Franky’s specialism lays in the prosthetics side of the course, which includes special effects make-up, character make-up, mould making in plaster, silicone, resin and fibre glass as well as life casting and making foam latex and silicon prosthetics appliances, to name a few.
Her responsibilities as a Technician include the management of the studios, the creation of a safe working environment for students and colleagues and the collaboration with course leaders for the delivery of the curriculum. Other vital parts of her role include supporting visiting lectures, finding the best optimal way of delivering technical process as well as supporting a vast variety of diverse learners.
15:00-15:45 – Room 1: Book Signing by Marshall Julius
Marshall will be signing copies of his latest book, Masters of Make-up Effects. A lively, affectionate and candid oral history of iconic make-up effects, from the artists who create and apply them, to the actors who bring them to life, written with Oscar-winning make-up effects artist Howard Berger.

15:30-16:15 – Room 2: Makeup Demonstration: Getting Your Brides Camera Ready with Jennifer Jane
Jenn will be demonstrating how to get your bride from bare face to looking fabulous on camera for those all important wedding photos.
Jennifer Jane is an internationally renowned hair and makeup artist, working out of London, North Yorkshire and the Balearics, best known for her stunning bridal work. Having started out as a model before becoming an MUA, she understands how products work in front of a camera. Jennifer trained at The London College of Fashion and Rouge School of Makeup and is now Founder and Course Director at The Bridal Makeup Academy.

A session for participants of the 2022 Bectu Mentoring Program to get to meet face to face with fellow mentees and mentors. This networking session will be hosted by mentors Jackie Sweeney, Bex Kerton and Ray McArthur.
CV Clinic, Monday, the Boardroom, 1-2pm – Hayley Young
Open to all show attendees. The Bectu Mentors will cast an eye over CV’s giving advice on what the industry likes to see. Please bring a printed copy of your CV so it can be marked up.
