Caroline Hirons this week launched her Skin Rocks app, a fount of advice and product recommendations – a sort of Hirons-in-your-pocket (“only with less swearing”, she says). It’s already in the Health & Fitness app chart following her soft launch on Facebook. If you don’t have it already, you can download the free app for Apple and Android.
The long-term aim of the app is to have every skincare product listed there – even ones that Caroline has blasted on her blog – so that you can see what’s what when you’re browsing on line or in store. You can log in and find out what’s in a product, what it does and whether it’s right for you (each product has a “you need this if… you don’t need this if…” summary). The idea is that you buy a product that suits you, rather than buying several that might work.
To keep the searches authentic, brands can’t pay to be bumped up the listings or have a ‘featured’ review, however they can pay to have their image on the product home page or to advertise in the content section. You can buy through the app – add products to your basket and then you’ll be directed to buy via the brand’s website or an online retailer such as Cult Beauty. The Skin Rocks app takes an affiliate commission on sales as one way of keeping the service free for the user.

In its latest effort to support the industry, the National Hair & Beauty Federation (NHBF) has responded to its Members’ concerns about energy costs by partnering with leading energy consultancy Direct Business Solutions (DBS) to help them save on their utility bills.
The new partnership comes in direct response to the NHBF’s State of the Industry survey in March reporting that 94% of salon owners across the UK had seen an increase in utility bills compared to the same period last year, with 32% stating that utility bills were their largest overhead.
Energy is essential for most businesses, especially for salons and barbershops, from charging hair clippers or hairdryers to running high tech body and face treatments, as well as lighting and heating your salon. Your needs differ from an average household and, as energy prices continue to rise, this adds to the pressure that salons are feeling across the UK.
With energy prices skyrocketing over the past year, finding the best deal for your salon is now essential. The new NHBF partnership with DBS aims to help salon owners manage the energy pricing crisis as simply as possible by finding the energy contract best suited to the individual business’s needs.
