Paul Huntley, hair master of Broadway and Hollywood died earlier this month aged 88. During his illustrious career he worked on over 200 Broadway and West End productions as well as many films and TV shows. He worked with Patti LuPone (Evita, Sunset Boulevard) throughout her career – she had his services written into her contracts. Glenn Close also became a regular after he created her wigs for Norma Desmond on Broadway. In 2003 he was given a special Tony Award for his decades of work . His 100+ designs for Hairspray in 2002 were décor as well as costume. He hand knotted for the leads in productions himself, working closely with his small team. He created Dustin Hoffman’s iconic 80s-permed affair in Tootsie, multi layered whirls for Dusty Springfield, Al Pacino’s Phil Spector frizz and his pet project, the original Broadway production of Cats in 1982, with every feline styled very differently using dyed yak hair to ensure gloss and volume.
Born in London in July 1933, he started concentrating solely on wigs in the 1950s for Stanley Hall’s Wig Creations, after completing his National Service. He’d spent some time previously touring in rep theatre as an actor and maintaining the wigs. He soon became Hall’s principal designer. In 1963, on the set of Cleopatra, Liz Taylor introduced him to Mike Leigh, who persuaded him to move to New York, sponsoring his visa application in 1973. He worked right up until theatre was closed by Covid last year. He had been preparing for the stage show Diana: A True Musical story, when he fell down the stairs, wig in hand, fracturing his pelvis. He announced his retirement, sold up and moved back to the UK. He died at the showbiz retirement home Denville Hall in Northwood, north-west London on 9th July. His partner, Paul Plassey, who helped him set up his business, died in 1991.

Knightsbridge retailer Harrods has unveiled its newly restyled hair and beauty salon on the fifth floor of the luxury department store. Harrods opened its first hairdressing and manicure department in 1894. For the department’s latest transformation, the new hair and beauty salon has been completely redesigned and pays homage to the salon’s 1982 design, featuring glossy peach marble, beautiful cream stone counters and powder-pink walls with gold finishes.
The newly designed space hosts treatment spaces that include a backwash room inspired by traditional Japanese head spa rituals, a conditioning bar offering the latest conditioning and scalp treatments, a hairdressing rotunda, and a hair extension library with an array of colours, lengths, and styles. In addition to hairstyling, the salon also offers a variety of transformative hair treatments from Trichology to Laser Hair removal, as well as a menu of exclusive facial treatments, waxing, massages, and body wraps. There is also a dedicated eye zone offering everything from eyelash extensions to exclusive Anastasia Beverly Hills eyebrow treatments, as well as a Townhouse manicure salon.
Complementing the expert treatments is a curated selection of 43 “powerhouse beauty brands” with several Harrods exclusives. Mia Collins, head of beauty at Harrods, added: “For the redesign of our newly reimagined Hair and Beauty Salon, we wanted to pay homage to the Salon’s heritage and bring back the sophistication and iconic glamour. We took inspiration from our rich archives to create a space that’s uniquely Harrods. Through the unique combination of the Salon’s design, exceptional treatments, and curated product offering, we strive to offer our customers a real celebration of what beauty is all about.”
