Cult hair care brand PHYTO was launched in 1967 by Parisian celebrity hairdresser the late Patrick Alès, but since then has remained for the most part a well-kept secret for hairstylists and beauty writers. He died in 2019 but he left a legacy of natural plant based products which were created decades ahead of their time; back in the 1950s when he was a salon apprentice in Paris he noticed that chemically-laden products were taking a serious toll on the hands of the hairdressers and the hair of their clientele. The range includes Phyto RE30 Anti-Grey Hair Treatment (£32.66) for grey or thinning hair, this will help you maintain your natural colour for as long as possible. Phyto Phytodetox Clarifying Detox Shampoo (£8.00) deeply cleanses to refresh polluted hair and scalps. Phyto Phytokeratine Repairing Heat Protecting Spray (£13.33) designed for hair that needs protection and repair from heat styling and sun exposure. Formulated around botanical keratin, a hair care wonder that absorbs in to smooth down the cells that make up a strand of hair. The end result is hair that is full, glossy and less frizzy. Phyto Phytojoba Moisturising Mask (£13.33) will help with dry hair leaving it healthier and sleeker-looking. Phyto Phytocolor Colour Protecting Shampoo (£8.00) SLS/SLES-free, it helps to protect and revive colour whether its highlights or a full head of colour. Available at escentual.com – and they are 1/3 off during January in their French Pharmacy promotion.
Olew, the Welsh curly hair brand, have just launched a maca root infused Curl Defining Gel (£15) a 4-in-1 hair wonder promoting growth, definition, volume and hold. Also known as Peruvian ginseng, maca root acts as a natural antioxidant, boosting levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase in the body and skin. These antioxidants neutralise free radicals, fight against inflammation and protect against damage to cells. The energizing properties also stimulate hair growth and its soothing properties help to soothe the scalp. The maca root and natural oil complex formulation can help prevent moisture loss to drastically reduce damage and split ends, detangle, nourish and add shine while improving hair strength, the anti-breakage properties protect hair from the environment and leaves curls nourished and defined with a medium hold without crispy curls. Available from olew.
HairFlair the go-to brand for direct heat-free, damage free curls, have just launched Waveformers Ripple Flair (£42.95) which came about due to customer demand. This revolutionary new type of heatless tool creates a ripple effect delivering a natural undulating wave rather than a traditional ringlet curl shape on all hair types and textures of hair. It gives an alternative to loose beachy waves, providing an on-trend, polished ripple look. Waves dominated the virtual runways this year, including at the Jason Wu NYFW presentation, which celebrated wavy, curly and coiled textured hair. Like the rest of the range, the new Ripple Flair ensures long lasting results and comes with 40 ripples and two new sized hooks for easy application. Available from hairflair.
HairFlair, have also just launched an eco-friendly, fully bio-degradable HairFlair Curl Detangling Comb (£6.95) using revolutionary material PLA, a green, plastic alternative reducing both traditional plastic production and carbon footprint. While 99% of marketed combs are made from single-use plastic, HairFlair’s first-to-market plastic-free comb is also specially designed for curly hair. The small minority of bio-degradable combs available are made from Bamboo, which has numerous environmental benefits, however water and wet styling products can damage the comb, shortening its usage life. PLA is a 100% bio-degradable polymer made from renewable resources including sugar cane, corn starch and Tapioca root, making the comb suitable for wet hair and compatible with any haircare product. The Curl Detangling Comb’s wide gap teeth design is ideal to detangle thick and hard to manage hair without ruining curls or waves. Available in two colour ways – black and pink, the comb has an ergonomic handle to comb through tangled hair with ease. Available from hairflair.

The Hair and Beauty Charity are still working to support those that need their help. They have had just over £250,000 donated recently from professional beauty expert, Caroline Hirons and the Beauty Backed campaign. They have funds available for those people who do need their help; ask them if you need support.
They are a small charity and have to prioritise assistance to those who need it most urgently. Priority will be given to households where only one adult (working within the industry) provides the only income to the household (e.g. if you live with your partner who will still receive an employed wage, priority will be given to single parent families whose only income is dependent on their hair/beauty industry wage). Visit their website for more information and to make an application.
