In one of our last events before the Spring lockdown, Warpaint’s Editorial Director headed to East London to Barking and Dagenham College to meet the tutors and students. As you’ll see from the pictures, our visit took place before COVID restrictions came into place.
Just over the northern end of the Dartford Crossing sits the Rush Green Campus. With a rollcall of 12,500 students, it’s been educating East Londoners for decades. In 2015, it cemented its creative credentials by becoming a Digital and Creative Industries Career College and has a dedicated team in teaching Level 2 and 3 to Hair, Makeup and Beauty students.
Tutors Lynne O’Meara and Lee Demmel had organised a competition for the students to design and create a look and introduced us to the students who were taking part. The day ended with a catwalk and judging.
17-year-old Lucy Kenwood from Dagenham was the winner of the Level 2 competition. Her ambition is to go on to study further at the College next year and then do media make-up as a career. The sugar skull she created on herself was beautifully executed and she explained that in her opinion, “Doing it on yourself is, in fact, easier than doing it on model because you are more familiar with own face and you know what looks good on you.”
Highly commended amongst the Level 2 Media Make-up students were Gabriele Ivoskeviciute, 18, from Dagenham and Ellie Ashford, 17, from Barking for the sugar skull design they did on 16-year-old model Ellie Brown also from Barking.
Chantelle Greenfield was chosen as the winner of the Level 3 entrants. The 17-year-old from Dagenham created a fabulous zombie on fellow student Chloe Croom using breakfast cereals amongst other things to create the look. We really liked the placement of what Chantelle applied and the way it was coloured.
In the same category, Jade Carpenter, 17, from West London was highly commended. Jade’s Zombie on fellow student Abigail Hancox impressed us, particularly the cut on the forehead, which was a difficult thing to do and was executed well.
We had a great day at the team and Barking and Dagenham College and can’t wait to go back and see them. All the pictures from the day are here in our Facebook album. Go ahead and tag your work.
