September 15th, 2020
2020 has been a challenging year for the makeup industry with the vast majority of our events being cancelled or postponed. Not so the World Bodypainting Festival which decided to take the plunge and bring the event online – with its own very special little twist.
Instead of its customary home at Klagenfurt by Lake Wörthersee in Austria, the Festival took its six major categories online, giving each its own day beginning with the Amateur Award for Brush and Sponge on Monday 6th July and ending with the World Award on Friday 10th July.

With over 600 participants from 55 nationalities over 17 time zones battling it out over the five days, this Festival was like nothing ever seen before. Not simply content with pulling all of this together, Alex Barendregt and his team added another level for the spectators who were watching from home and established 19 WBF Creative Hotspots across the world. Spanning five continents the Hotspots stretched from Las Vegas to Seoul, Auckland to Rome, Costa Rica to Kiev, and provided a venue where artists could come together to work online.

Known for the spectacular visual experience of the Festival as well as the creativity of the painting, Alex and the team then broadcast live on Facebook on the Saturday to round off the hugely successfully week and reveal the winners.
Highlights were South Korea triumphing in the Amateur award for Brush and Sponge, with Yu Sohyeon taking first and Lee Yeajun finishing third, while it was a clean sweep for Mexico in the Facepainting World Award. Winner Noe Duran was also awarded the crown for Brush and Sponge World Award. Tatiana Velichkina from Russia had a great Festival, taking second place in both Creative Makeup Special Award and Special Effects Makeup Special Award. Triple champion from 2008, 2014 and 2015, Alex Hansen from Brazil, took the Airbrush title for a fourth time.

While it’s not the same as being there in person, we loved how this year’s Festival has been staged and can’t wait to join them in Austria again next year. Dates are announced for 22–24 July 2021 with extended sessions beginning from 18th. Go to bodypainting-festival.com for more details. https://bodypainting-festival.com/en/tickets
See you in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee – fingers crossed.
