Since the government’s 11th Hour announcement on Friday last week that this industry had to put the brakes back on, feelings of anger and frustration have boiled over. Beauty, with all its safety and hygiene underpinning every practice, is benched while pubs, bars and picnics in the park are seemingly encouraged. And the Chancellor’s pledge that no-one will face this alone rings hollow in the ears of the majority who have had no income whatsoever since March 23rd.
The truth is that the powers that be don’t – and apparently can’t – understand the value of the tax receipts from the £28 billion that Beauty contributes to the economy, more in fact than Motor Vehicle Manufacturing. It supports hundreds of thousands of livelihoods and one in every 60 jobs in the UK is in Beauty. And on 3rd August, the industry finally said No, that enough is really and truly enough. If the government isn’t going to provide any support, then it’s time to do it ourselves.
Skincare Queen, Caroline Hirons took to Instagram to mobilise her army of followers to protect the Beauty industry that we all know and love. The post is devastating in its sincerity and I defy you to watch it without welling up along with Caroline.
Teaming up with The Hair and Beauty Charity who have supported individuals and their families since 1853, she launched the Beauty Backed initiative to raise both funds and support for the reopening of the Beauty industry in its entirety, with a Go Fund Me Fundraiser and Change.org Petition platforms.
With the support of industry experts and influencers as well as The British Beauty Council and BABTAC, Beauty Backed is raising money, support and awareness for the clinics, aestheticians, makeup artists and therapists unable to work. With a target of £100,000, in the four hours since the fundraiser has launched, it’s already reached its halfway point. There is no doubt that the funds will continue pouring in.
