As we practice social distancing and many people are self-isolating, any planned trips to the barber or hairdresser have had to be postponed. However in these days of Zoom, Skype and House Party you may want to ensure your hair is in tip top condition and keep an eye on those roots.
Hair Hygiene
It’s not just our hands we need to keep clean, but our hair as well. It’s really tempting when social distancing at home to skip that hair wash. However top Trichologist Lisa Caddy says:
“Busy lives and early starts can mean we often have to forgo the hair washing in order to get an extra 15 mins in bed! This means tying hair up in a ponytail and packing on the dry shampoo. If you’re working from home and have a bit of extra time get into new good habits and wash your hair more often not less. It makes you feel fresher and clean and less tempted to stay in your pyjamas. We can’t imagine how many times a day we touch our hair and therefore transfer germs. Unwashed hair means more oil on the scalp which attracts more dirt, dust & bacteria.”
Rather than spending time drying and straightening/curling your hair, use the time to apply a treatment instead.
Living Proof Dry Scalp Treatment (£25) works to relieve an irritated, itchy and dry scalp both instantly and over time. It has a vitamin B3 complex to rebalance the scalp’s natural ecosystem and hyaluronic acid for a controlled release of hydration. Hair Detox
By reducing down your blow drying and heat styling from 7 days to 4 you could dramatically improve your hair condition. Let your hair air dry and save it from the wear and tear of over grooming. Take the opportunity to deeply moisturise it instead by layering on treatment products. It may look a little flat, but will be super hydrated and shiny.
Lisa recommends using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (£34) and leaving on for a few hours before rinsing it out and letting hair air dry before bed. Shampoo the next morning to get rid of any residue and then use Daily Damage Defence (£25) and Preen Cream (£21) to the ends for day long nourishment and moisture.

You could also use this time to grow out your colour. Trichologist Lisa Caddy says
“Colouring hair more than every 12 weeks can mean too much overlap. However, many people colour every 4 weeks and so if you can give your hair a colour holiday it will help the condition. Disguise roots (if you have to do video chats!) with camouflage products colour matched to your natural hair colour. If you’ve been thinking of embracing the grey but hate the transition of growing colour out, now is a great time to let your natural colour show few inches and see If you think it’s going to suit you.”
If you’re growing out your hair and it’s getting in your eyes, try Only Curls Speckle Snap Hair Clips (£8) perfect for clipping your hair in place, or for fixing an up do. The smooth acetate clips slide in and out of your hair without getting tangled. Available from onlycurls.
Whatever you do, try not to succumb to the temptation to cut your own hair, unless you’re trained – you may have to live with the results for far longer than lockdown lasts!
