At Home Hair Care

As we practice social distancing and many people are self-isolating, any planned trips to the barber or hairdresser have had to be postponed.  However in these days of Zoom, Skype and House Party you may want to ensure your hair is in tip top condition and keep an eye on those roots.

Hair Hygiene

It’s not just our hands we need to keep clean, but our hair as well.  It’s really tempting when social distancing at home to skip that hair wash.  However top Trichologist Lisa Caddy says:

Busy lives and early starts can mean we often have to forgo the hair washing in order to get an extra 15 mins in bed! This means tying hair up in a ponytail and packing on the dry shampoo.  If you’re working from home and have a bit of extra time get into new good habits and wash your hair more often not less.  It makes you feel fresher and clean and less tempted to stay in your pyjamas.  We can’t imagine how many times a day we touch our hair and therefore transfer germs.  Unwashed hair means more oil on the scalp which attracts more dirt, dust & bacteria.”

Rather than spending time drying and straightening/curling your hair, use the time to apply a treatment instead.

Living Proof Dry Scalp Treatment (£25) works to relieve an irritated, itchy and dry scalp both instantly and over time.  It has a vitamin B3 complex to rebalance the scalp’s natural ecosystem and hyaluronic acid for a controlled release of hydration.  Apply to clean hair and leave in, fast-absorbing and weightless without leaving any residue.   Available from livingproofspacenk, John LewisMarks & SpencerSelfridges and Harrods.

Philip Kingsley Bond Builder Split End Remedy (£26) – For the appearance of just cut hair, without a trip to the salon.  The first of its kind to work both on and below the surface of the hair to repair broken bonds, seal fibres and protect strands, for longer, stronger hair.  Available from philipkingsley.

Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil Lavender Pure Butter (£8.99) is the first brand to convert Jamaican black castor oil into pure butter.  Enhanced only with lavender essential oil, this wonder product is very hydrating.  It promotes healthy hair growth, acts as a sealant for dry hair, and nourishes dry, itchy, flaky scalps.  It’s perfect to help repair hair if you’re growing out chemical treaments, dye or relaxant.  It can also be used on dry and sensitive skin.  Available from jamaicanblackcastoroil.

R+Co Crown Scalp Scrub (£35.95) is a purifying, soothing scrub to detox, cleanse and rebalance your scalp.  Perfect for sensitive or oily scalps as well as those looking for a clean, rebalanced scalp and shiny, healthy hair.  With a bright, earthy fragrance formulated with lemon, tangerine, eucalyptus, green tea, tree moss and crisp amber.  Vegan and cruelty-free.  Available from beautyrebel.

V76 Brightening Conditioner (£16) brightens gray, white and blonde hair—leaving it soft and shiny.  Coarse strands will be softened, hydrated and noticeably brightened over time.  Formulated with sage leaf extract and sunflower seed extract to nourish the scalp, strengthen hair and protect against free radicals.  Leave on longer for a conditioning treatment.  Formulated for men, but suitable for all genders.  Available from beautyrebel.

Hair Detox

By reducing down your blow drying and heat styling from 7 days to 4 you could dramatically improve your hair condition.  Let your hair air dry and save it from the wear and tear of over grooming.  Take the opportunity to deeply moisturise it instead by layering on treatment products.  It may look a little flat, but will be super hydrated and shiny.

Lisa recommends using Philip Kingsley Elasticizer (£34) and leaving on for a few hours before rinsing it out and letting hair air dry before bed.  Shampoo the next morning to get rid of any residue and then use Daily Damage Defence (£25) and Preen Cream (£21) to the ends for day long nourishment and moisture.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day In-Shower Styler (£23) gives your hair a break from heat and tension caused by styling.  Allow hair to naturally air-dry and enhance volume and texture with this styler.  Applied to damp hair it gives weightless body and texture.  It’s great for curls too.   Available from livingproofspacenkJohn LewisMarks & SpencerSelfridges and Harrods.

Watermans Grow More Elixir (£25) in addition to supporting the growth of long, flowing strands, this hair growth treatment is also beneficial for those struggling with dry and damaged hair follicles.  This hair growth serum is perfect for individuals that only wash their hair a few times a week; apply the no rinse, leave-in treatment directly to the scalp for ultimate growth results.  Available from watermanshair.

Regrowz Hairgrowth Serum (3 months for £49.95) Contains a scalp stimulant and restoration treatment. It contains only natural products to restore hair to its natural state and promote healthy hairgrowth. Cruelty- free and available for both men and women.  Available from regrowz.

Home Colour

If you’re worried about your roots showing, or missing your regular grey coverup, rather than trying a home dye that could have disastrous results, you could always give one of these products a try instead

R+Co Bright Shadows Root Touch Up Spray (£25) will give roots the boot.  In seven shades (black, dark brown, medium brown, light brown, dark blonde, light blonde and red) these instantly cover regrowth, whatever the colour, not just grey, in between colour appointments.  No stickiness, dustiness or transfer, this has a target actuator for mess-free application.  The multi-dimensional shade provides coverage until shampooed out.  Ingredients also include vegan pearl extract, biotin, mica and tapioca starch to give thickness and shine.  Available from beautyrebel.

Batiste Dry Shampoo and A Hint Of Colour (£3.99) offers a quick, temporary root cover up and also allows you create a natural balayage to style larger areas of regrowth.  Available in three shades (blonde, brunette and dark).  Available from Sainsburys, Boots, Superdrug, Wilkinsons and UK supermarkets.

Toppik Coloured Hair Thickener (£18.95) will disguise colour re-growth and greys, touching up roots until your next appointment with your colourist.  As well as covering roots this will give the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.  Available in four natural-looking shades (black, dark brown, medium brown and light brown) it fills in scalp show-through whilst adding volume to the hair.  It will stay put all day without transference, and washes out with shampoo.  Available from toppik and amazon.

Living Proof Color Care Whipped Glaze (£24) will keep colour lasting longer and looking brighter.  The formula deposits a temporary dye to instantly counteract colour fading.  Available in two shades, Light will brighten brassiness in blondes and balayage while Dark adds warmth and glossiness to brunettes.  Available from livingproofspacenkJohn LewisMarks & SpencerSelfridges and Harrods.

Infuse. My Colour (£16.95) is a range of award-winning shampoo that infuses your hair with colour pigment as you wash.  These will refresh existing colour and add tone, while making your root regrowth less noticeable as the colour tones will disguise it.  Consecutive applications will add more tone and gloss to the hair.  Available in 7 colours suitable for black to platinum hair shades (ruby, colbalt, copper, gold, platinum, graphite, and quartz).  Check on the website to see what each shade will do for different coloured hair, whether dyed or natural.  Follow with the Treat Conditioner (£17.95) to complete the regime of colour infusion.  Silicon-free, formulated with hemp seed oil, hibiscus extract and plant-derived ceramides.  100% PETA certified, cruelty-free and vegan, free from parabens, silicones and sulfates.  Available from my-haircare and beautybay.

You could also use this time to grow out your colour.  Trichologist Lisa Caddy says

“Colouring hair more than every 12 weeks can mean too much overlap.  However, many people colour every 4 weeks and so if you can give your hair a colour holiday it will help the condition.  Disguise roots (if you have to do video chats!) with camouflage products colour matched to your natural hair colour.  If you’ve been thinking of embracing the grey but hate the transition of growing colour out, now is a great time to let your natural colour show few inches and see If you think it’s going to suit you.”

If you’re growing out your hair and it’s getting in your eyes, try Only Curls Speckle Snap Hair Clips (£8) perfect for clipping your hair in place, or for fixing an up do.  The smooth acetate clips slide in and out of your hair without getting tangled.  Available from onlycurls.

Whatever you do, try not to succumb to the temptation to cut your own hair, unless you’re trained – you may have to live with the results for far longer than lockdown lasts!
