The Makeup Armoury – Intensive Medical Workshop with Paul Savage OBE

A four-day sfx workshop with Paul to help you get to grips with anatomy, realistic wound and injury sculpting, blood rigs and more.  Includes the medical science behind burns, bruising, fractures etc.  You can utilise Paul’s wealth of knowledge and his graphic medical reference library that will assist your creation of realism.

This course is designed for MUAs who have some previous experience in casting and moulding.  Note that the course contains images of real wounds and bodies.

The Powder Group‘s Makeup 101 program is for new and established MUAs.  It will take you beneath your process, guiding you to a new, more focused way of thinking about your work.  The next session takes place in NYC and is three inspiring and informative days of industry insight, technique, product and artistry led by The Powder Group, Director of Artistry and Rebels and Outlaws, Founder, James Vincent along with the incredible Bethany Townes.

From a review of the industry today and in-depth color theory development, to an intensive study of beauty makeup and developing a deep understanding in working in HD and photography, this is the most intensive makeup program from The Powder Group.  Makeup 101 is not only an amazing way to get your start in truly understanding the process and world of the professional makeup artist, but is a great way to rethink, regroup and rework your artistry for those who have already been working in the industry but want to move their artistry to the next level. For hairstylists or those in other areas of the industry this program is an incredible way to start, or top up, your knowledge of the art of makeup.

Kryolan run a number of workshops focusing on different elements and styles for makeup, sfx and bodypainting.  The educators are current make-up artists who have been in the industry for many years.  In each workshop you will learn about different technique, products and equipment to use, and about the industry itself and how you can achieve the best artistry for that particular genre of make-up.  Suitable for all candidates from beginners to advanced.

Creative Media Skills are a Pinewood Studios based centre of excellence for film training.  They work hand-in-hand with the industry and the companies that support it, to facilitate specific and targeted training requirements at the top level.  UK screen professionals pass on their huge amouts of experience and knowledge to the next generation of crew at an internationally unrivalled level.

As well as short courses CMS offer higher education courses in partnership with Bucks New University, including BA and MA courses.

Makeup Schools

The UK also has some amazing makeup schools that offer short courses and degree and certificated courses of study.

The Iver Make-Up Academy is based in the heart of Pinewood Studios, offering industry-based courses in film, TV, theatre and fashion for make-up, hair and SFX artists.   Courses run from 2 days to 30 weeks covering the skills needed to work in the industry and includes training for special effect makeup, wig dressing, airbrushing and more.

The Brushstroke Hair and Makeup Academy is based at both Pinewood and Shepperton Studios and has been training aspiring artists for nearly 30 years.  They specialise in providing longer courses that equip students with the necessary skills to launch successful careers as a professionally trained MUA in film, TV or fashion.   They offer BTEC and ITEC courses for students aged 16+ and have the largest makeup training facilities in Europe, at their Shepperton Studio site.

Their flagship course – the Two Year Makeup and Hair (BTEC Level 3 Diploma) is eligible for BAFTA scholarship.  Their short courses are designed for people new to the industry and experienced MUAs wishing to expand or top up their skills.

The Christine Blundell Makeup Academy for Film and Television is based in Camden, north London and runs an intensive four-month Hair and Makeup Course with guaranteed onset work experience after graduation.  Shorter courses on prosthetics, media makeup, theatrical hair and makeup as well as barbering, wigs and hairstyling are also available.

The academy’s next open evening is on Saturday 27th February, 6-9pm or you can attend a taster day course on Saturday 28th March where you can learn about casualty makeup.  They also offer a number of bursaries in conjunction with Screenskills.

London’s Delamar Academy of Makeup and Hair was established in 1986 and can boast Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy awarding winning artists among their alumni as well as a Vogue Make-Up Artist of the Year and an Indian Academy Award.

Based at Ealing Studios, they offer everything from 1 week courses in basic hair or basic make up to a one year Cert HE Professional Makeup Design (equivalent to the first year of a degree course).

Classes are taught through practical demonstrations and one-to-one attention on each student’s work.  Students work on each other or a model with a very practical and hands-on approach from day one.  The focus is on developing students’ practical skills.  Class times are 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.  The academy also holds guest master-classes and industry talks throughout the year featuring top industry experts and artists
