BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing final airs this weekend.  The final three contestants are all aiming for gold and the elusive glitter ball trophy.  However Carrie Marsh is more focussed on bronze.  That’s because she is the VIP Spray Tanner for top professional and retail tanning brand Norvell.  Loved for her personable approach, flawless colour and totally unique tanning tips, she currently is ensuring all the Strictly crew have HD ready tans.

We caught up with her to chat self-tanning and all things Strictly!

You started out as a beauty therapist, how did your career take you to Strictly?

I’ve now been working with Norvell for 5 years, and the brand has created fantastic opportunities for me in working with celebrities and being a VIP spray tanner.  Within my role I also educate people about both the consumer and professional range.  For the past 3 years Norvell have been the official backstage tanners for Strictly and it’s been so much fun! Each week we tan the cast so that they are camera-ready and ready to literally dazzle.  The tan works well for TV, as it’s formulated with an anti-orange VIO-7 blend, so it counteracts any orange pigmentation which is unlike other tanning brands.

What’s your first make up memory? What’s the first product you remember using, and has that affected your later product choices?

I’ve always been into make-up, and I remember MAC highlighters being such a game-changer when they became popular. I have always loved making my skin glow, whether that’s through my make-up or through my tan. Norvell have a product called the ‘Dazzle Shimmering Mist’ which is amazing for your face and body for an all-over glow, but it can also be added to your hair for a shimmery effect!

What’s the one piece of makeup you can’t do without?

Mascara! I think lashes can complement any look and it just makes me feel more put together if I’ve got mascara on. I don’t mind so much not wearing foundation day-to-day as I am always tanned, so I don’t need to worry about face make-up as much. I don’t feel myself without a tan. The Norvell 4-Faces Facial Mist is a great alternative to foundation and much loved by the industry MUA’s. The face tanner can be applied with a make-up sponge to evenly coat your skin for a glowing effect.

What are the challenges of getting all the celebs and pro dancers ready for each Strictly show?  How closely do you work with the MUA and hair teams?

The tanning on Strictly comes first, usually it’s a day ahead before the show on Saturday. We have so much fun spraying the contestants and professionals, often taking funny videos and messing around, but it’s also important for us to have them show-ready for the weekend!

You must have to deal with celebs who have never been tanned before – what are their concerns how do you reassure them?

Naturally it can be a bit nerve-wrecking for the first-time tan.  We always talk through the process and make conversation the whole time so no one feels uncomfortable but the celebs are relaxed.  Usually they’re all excited to get in the tanning tent after the first time! Initially, they want a light colour but each week they just want darker and darker and they won’t get out of the tent!

What advice can you give to nervous self-tanners at home?

To self-tan at home, it’s important you follow the right before and after care to maintain your tan and achieve the best colour results.  Norvell make it easy with their products designed to Prime, Bronze, Enhance and Optimise your tan.  One of Norvell’s innovative products is the Amplify pH skin balancing solution which evens your skin colouration for a more even toned finish. The brand also have a 2-in-1 gradual tanner and CC Cream called BOOST which helps to maintain your glow whilst encouraging skin hydration and moisture, plus it has anti-ageing properties which is fab!

What’s your favourite memory of working with the Strictly Glam Team?

There’s been so many great times working with the Strictly lot. I honestly don’t think I have a favourite as they have all been amazing but I think Debbie McGee was the most memorable. It will be hard to forget her opera singing in the tent to distract her from how cold the tanning solution was!

WP:  Any final tips for the Warpaint readers?

Being a Norvell certified spray tanner is so much fun as a career, and it’s a great add-on service for make-up artists and beauty therapists who are aspiring to expand their skills and beauty offerings to their clients.
