Blushing Brides

April 18th, 2019

April 18th, 2019

Everyone has heard of fashion week, but what do you know about Bridal Fashion Week?  Megan Garmers of MG Hair and Makeup, gives us an insight into this specialist side of the industry.

Just like regular fashion week, Bridal Fashion Week happens twice a year in New York.  Specifically, in the UK, there are two Bridal Fashion Weeks – one in London in March and one in Harrogate in September.  This is where the bridal gown designers, accessories designers, bridal retail stores and press all come together to see what’s new for the next season to permeate the wedding industry.

LBFW

We have been the preferred hair and makeup service for many designers at New York Bridal Fashion Week since 2009 and now we just finished doing London Bridal Fashion Week this past March.

Here is a sneak peek into the world of wedding gowns, backstage hair and makeup and the catwalk shows from London Bridal Fashion Week. Video by Denee Motion.

Every show is different: some are for a single designer and others are multi-designer shows.  We work with each designer to determine the right look and then choose the right products to fit the need.

Day One

The first day we had Morilee, Allure Bridals, The Preview Show (multi-designer), and Justin Alexander.  The Morilee hair was a beachy but voluminous wave achieved using a cocktail of IGK Beach Club Texture Spray, Intern Flexible Hairspray and First Class Dry Shampoo.  The makeup look was a natural desert rose beauty look with bronzed eyes and cheeks and neutral lips.  We used a mixture of colors from two of the 5 Eyeshadows Palettes Nude and Natural Brown by Makeup Atelier Paris and applied it with Kit Stars new brush sets.  The natural finish and flawless skin were achieved with the Makeup Atelier Paris Fluid Foundation.  The lips were glossy and neutral thanks to the Beige Mauve Starshine Lip Gloss.

For Allure Bridals, we only had a small amount of time to change the hair and makeup before the show was ready to start.  The eye makeup had to change to a gray smoky eye and the Black and White 5 Eyeshadows Palette by Makeup Atelier Paris helped us accomplish this quickly.  The hair also needed to be curled and pulled back into a sleek chignon.

The Preview Show had lots of different designers and various headpieces that went with each gown so we had to keep the hair universal enough to work with all the designs.  The side part with a mid-low bun kept the focus on the designs and off the hair.  The makeup was a bit more smoky but on plum side of the spectrum to add more color.  We also added a bit more blush to give a more “blushing bride” look to gowns.

Justin Alexander was the last show of the first day and it was absolutely spectacular.  The gowns were fantastic silhouettes in a range of designs for every bride’s personal taste.  The hair was cleaned up but still a low updo and the makeup was a shimmery plum eye, soft pink lip with a natural-looking highlight and contour to the face.

Day Two

The second day we had Ronald Joyce, Coya, The Preview Show (multi-designer), and Modeca, Herve Paris, and Randy Fenoli with hair accessories by Miranda Templeton.

LBFW

Ronald Joyce started the day with voluminous glamour curls with a natural brown smoky eye and thin winged eyeliner.

LBFW

Coya was a whimsical selection of gowns full of color, sparkle and drama.  The makeup was soft natural pink for the cheeks and lip and a youthful messy ponytail.

The last show was a multi-designer show featuring Modeca, Herve Paris and Randy Fenoli.  You may recognize the name as the same Randy Fenoli who was on the very popular TV show, Say Yes to the Dress.  Modeca and Herve Paris had loose textured updos to show off the Miranda Templeton hair pieces and the beautiful necklines of their gowns.  However, in the middle of show as the models changed into their Randy Fenoli gowns, the artists had to rush to take out the pins of the updo and let the hair down to show a sexy beachy wave for the Randy Fenoli Bridal gowns.  It was a tight timeline but executed perfectly and the audience was stunned with the final result.

We are looking forward to the next Bridal Fashion Week in the UK in Harrogate September 8-10.  If you are interested in being a part of the backstage beauty team, please apply at: https://www.mghairandmakeup.com/nybfw-artists/

For those who are ready to take a serious step towards a career as a bridal artist, The Bridal Beauty Masterclass is coming to London September 2-3, 2019.  The location is next to City Airport so it is an easy hop over from another country.

LBFW

There are tons of classes and education but you want to make sure you are investing in education that is taught by qualified instructors.  Kevin James Bennett is an Emmy-Award-winning artist with over three decades of experience and a truth-teller in the beauty industry.  I am the founder and director of MG Hair and Makeup, the oldest (almost two decades) and largest, award-winning US-based hair and makeup agency specialising in bridal with close to three decades of experience.  We speak at industry trade shows such as IMATS, The Makeup Show, International Beauty Show and many more.  We also sit on the Make-Up Designory School Professional Advisory Committee to review their curriculum ensuring that it is relevant for artists to be working makeup artists in the industry.

LBFW

This is an amazing two-day lecture and hands-on workshop full tips, tricks, and special secrets we will spill.  There will be an amazing gift bag full of goodies (worth over $800) from Love Makeup for those who attend the 2-day class as well – which is almost the price of the class!  The lecture will focus on the details of what it means to take your business to the next level. Whether you are just starting out or improving your business to handle more clients and operate more smoothly, the lecture is for you.  We will be discussing everything from determining your target bride, your brand and its niche to social media, reviews and how to price your services and packages.

LBFW

The hands-on day will include a demo by Kevin and then your hands-on time to replicate what he showed. Whether you are a new artist or experienced, you will come away with mind-blowing pieces of information and technique to immediately start practicing and integrating into your regular routine.
