With a background in pharmacy, skincare, makeup and aesthetics, there’s very little that Marie Meskheli doesn’t know about the beauty industry. As the founder and creator of Delfy Cosmetics, she’s brought that background to the market with pro-quality make-up, skincare, body care and nail care, and operates in 15 countries worldwide.
What brought you into the make-up industry? Where did you train and who were your first make-up influences?
From a young age, I always suffered with sensitive skin and was prone to a variety of allergies, which meant when I got older and discovered cosmetics, I always had to be very careful when choosing the correct products, especially skincare creams and make-up to ensure they did not react with my skin. This led to me having a strong interest in beauty and science. After graduating with a PHD in Pharmacy from Tbilisi State Medical University, Georgia, this inspired me to enter the pharmaceutical and aesthetics industry where I worked my way up from a Scientific Research Manager to the Head of Division for a pharmaceutical company. I then opened Lotus, my first aesthetic medicine centre and expanded to a chain of six centres operating within the group. I then moved with my family to the city of Barcelona in Spain, which I saw as the ideal opportunity to venture into the make-up industry and develop my own brand.
My first make-up influencer was Bobbi Brown, I really admire her as a professional make-up artist and successful international businesswoman. Miuccia Prada is also a very savvy and successful businesswoman.
Creating a range is a tough undertaking. What inspired Delfy Cosmetics? Did you work your way up to the position you are in now?
I have always had strong ambitions to develop my own cosmetics brand – I wanted to create an affordable range of colour cosmetics and skincare products that use high quality, non-toxic ingredients that are kind to your skin and suitable for the most sensitive skin types. After several years of research and development Delfy Cosmetics was born. Here I was able to combine my pharmaceutical, pharmacological and chemical knowledge with my expertise of working in the aesthetics industry to create and formulate an innovative range of high-performance cosmetics. We now operate from our Head Office in Barcelona with manufacturing facilities in Spain, France and Italy.
What was the first product you developed and where are they produced?
The first line of products that we produced were Delfy Cosmetics Professional Nail Polishes. We created the range with a patented formulation and ensured it belonged to the safety class 12-free (Free from Dibutyl Phthalate, Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, xylene, sulphates, silicones, ethyl tosylamide, parabens and acetone). We curate products that are ethical and transparent about their ingredients, kind to the planet and not tested on animals. The Delfy Cosmetics Professional Nail Polishes are produced in France. We wanted to be at the forefront of the industry with our unique designs, patented technology and are continually developing and formulating new products to add innovations to the market in a short time period.
Which is your favourite in the Delfy range and why?
It is very hard to select a favourite product from the range, and my favourite aspect is actually the process of creating each individual product from the initial idea to production. Every single product under the trademark Delfy is created very carefully and approved by me after long period of working on the concept, from searching for high quality ingredients, undertaking hundreds of trials of formulations and textures, creating designs until the pre-production. No product is produced until I give it the final seal of approval. I’m very excited about our new Delfy Cosmetics first powder palette collection that we are in the process of creating, I think this will be a great addition to the range. It is very rewarding and inspiring when you see the final product and end result after months of development from concept to completion.
Who are your competitor brands?
I think we have a unique concept that differentiates us from other brands. We pride ourselves on offering high quality products with unique, fashion forward and innovative designs that we can bring quickly to market. The main key of our success is our product itself and people that have started to follow the brand.
Who would be your dream face to work with and why?
My dream face to work with would be Sarah Jessica Parker, she was a huge influence for me in my early 20s and I love her style and ethos.
What’s the next big beauty trend? Where do you get your forecasts from?
For the moment, the most important challenge for us is reducing the impact of plastic pollution, with new thoughtful packaging strategies. We are a member of ECOEMBES (the organisation that cares for the environment through recycling and the eco-design of packaging in Spain).
Another big beauty trend is to create a great anti-ageing complex that will be slow down the ageing process. In today’s modern society a lot of women spend the majority of their time on social media and they can become very concerned about the first signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles. I am constantly looking for a new ingredients and innovations, by visiting different symposia to research this area. Delfy Cosmetics is not only a business for me, but the manner of life.
What’s your favourite era or sub culture?
Even though, in a different age, I was inspired by different cultures (Goth, Neo-Victorianism) now, with my nature, I think I am a person who now appreciates high culture. It inspired me when I started to study an Ancient Greece culture. “Know the best that has been said and thought in the world” – Achieve perfection – this is a key motivation for me when working on my projects.
Who continues to inspire you?
At the beginning of my career, I would have listed a number of influencers, however as I have progressed, I think the biggest inspiration for me are the people that love Delfy Cosmetics, who trust and expect the very best quality from us. This is my main motivation when I create a new product for Delfy Cosmetics.
What’s next in the Delfy range?
We are launching a stunning new Delfy Cosmetics Blusher Palette (£33). This exquisite palette contains five different shades of blushers to lift your complexion and accentuate your cheeks bones. Here you can choose from four silky powder pigments in matte and shimmering shades and one soft creamy highlighter to ensure a seamless application and a beautiful flawless finish. These soft, buildable shades create a variety of looks, from an ultra-sheer finish to powerful pops of colour. Each iconic shade features subtle pink and beige undertones for an elegant natural looking blush perfect for summer!
