October 10th, 2018
Professional Beauty North is approaching, and as always, we’re extremely excited to welcome both professionals and students to compete in the Warpaint Championships! On the 22nd October, beauty aficionados will gather at Manchester Central to take part, admire, and judge a whole range of makeup looks. The deadline for entry is fast approaching – 10am on Thursday 18th October – so pick your model and category, and get planning! The categories are as follows:
Film & TV: Christmas Movies
Two hours will be allowed for this category – 10:30 – 12:30
With the nights drawing in and the days becoming ever cooler, we’re already dreaming of Christmas. From The Grinch to The Nightmare Before Christmas, there are thousands of characters waiting to come to life, though do be aware that you have to include all the compulsory elements – a full list can be found here for pros and here for students – including but certainly not limited to: character makeup, a prosthetic piece, and hand laid hair. You’ll be judged on your interpretation of the theme, as well as your creativity and skill. You must bring an inspiration board with you on the day to demonstrate your thought process, which you’ll talk through with the judges.
Real Beauty: Classic Beauty Icons
Pros will have 90 minutes for a daytime look, followed by a break for
Photography, and then 30 minutes to convert the look into an evening one – 10:30 – 13:30
Students will have 90 minutes for a daytime look, followed by a break for
Photography, and then 30 minutes to convert the look into an evening one – 10:30 – 13:00
This category is all about making beauty work for real women, and is judged on your ability to work with and bring out your model’s features, as well as your application and technique. Design a look fit for a classic beauty icon – think Audrey Hepburn, Twiggy, and Brigitte Bardot – and style your lucky model from head to toe. Models must be over 16, but there are no other restrictions: create a flawless, age-appropriate look that works for your model’s skin tone and face shape. You’ll need to present an inspiration board that includes a picture of your model as she normally looks – before and after shots will be compared to gauge the full effect of your work. For the evening transformation, you’re permitted only four items to work with, aside from brushes: one hair item and three makeup items. Full specifications can be found here for pros and here for students.
Runway: Flora and Fauna
Both pros and students will have two hours – 10:30 – 12:30
Runway looks have often drawn inspiration from nature, from Alexander McQueen to Christopher Kane. This year, we’re looking for you to take this theme and make it your own. From autumnal leaves crunching underfoot to wide-eyed baby deer, the scope is endless – so your mood board is essential for storyboarding your inspiration and vision. Both male and female models are permitted. Full details can be found here for pros and here for students.
Bodypainting: The Four Elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water
Pros will have five hours – 9:00 – 14:30 with a compulsory 30 minute break at 12:00
Students will have four hours: 9:30 – 14:00 with a compulsory 30 minute break at 12:00
Once again, we’re looking to nature for inspiration in this theme, but this time, it’s elemental forces we’re interested in. The judges – Jennie Roberts from Paintopia, Jo Peters, and Angela Youngs – will be looking at your interpretation of the theme, application, use of adornments to enhance work, and technique, as well as marking the design for the face, and consideration for other competitors. You may use any or all of: airbrush, sponge, and brush. Stencils are permitted, but may not be used for more than 25% of the overall design. Students paint only the upper body, and may costume the head and lower body to match the design, while pros must paint the entire body in the time provided. A full list of what is prohibited, as well as timings and specifications, can be found here for pros and here for students.
All categories are open to both professionals and students. The entry prices are £25 for pros and £10 for students before the deadline, which is 10am on Thursday 18th October. You can find all the competitor packs, timetables, and details of how to enter here. Good luck, and we’ll see you there!
