Meet Kristen Robinson, Murad’s Director of New Product Development. We love her story about how she found her way to the brand, and her skincare tips for makeup artists are absolutely priceless.
WP: What’s your background? How long have you been working with Murad and how did you becoming involved with the company’s NPD?
KR: I struggled with acne starting in 7th grade – blessed with a selfless mother I visited dermatologists within a two-mile radius of my town trying to treat the acne that covered my face and spent a lot of time and money trying everything possible. It became my quest and my passion to really find something that would work and it was through those struggles that I discovered Murad. I connected better with a Murad Customer care representative over the phone than I did with any dermatologist and finally, I found a place of refuge and relief. I learned about the Connected Beauty philosophy, to not take harsh antibiotics and to treat my skin with the right products and lifestyle.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from West Virginia University, and after deciding not to pursue medical school, I sought a career where I could contribute to the field of dermatology without being a dermatologist. A long-time customer and fan of Murad, I decided to move to LA and contribute to the success of this company as it helped my skin so much I had such a genuine passion and belief in this amazing brand. Product development, specifically at Murad, allows me the opportunity to be immersed in and advance the skincare industry. I’ve now worked for Murad for 10 years.
WP: What work does Murad do with makeup artists in the US? Are you able to share any of the names that you work with?
KR: Our Global PR team in LA work with a lot of great makeup artists and supply them with our products to help their clients. Allan Avendano, Carlene Kearns, Kimberly Bragalone and Kerrie Urban are a few.
WP: What are the hero products that makeup artists love?
KR: We develop products like Invisiblur (£60) that are ideal for makeup artists to use on their clients as it works very much as a primer. I’ve always said that skincare is makeup, if our skin looks and feels great, then it’s the best canvas to work with when makeup is applied. Invisiblur has five key benefits: not only is it an anti-ageing treatment, it also blurs, primes, moisturises and protects the skin with an invisible sunscreen leaving a flawless complexion, so it’s a perfect primer underneath makeup.
On top of the SPF protection the unique formula uses Shitake Mushroom and Mucor Miehei Peptides to stimulate collagen production, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, along with a Soft-Focus Complex that blurs, softens and primes skin for a flawless complexion so clients are camera and red carpet ready.
WP: A client with a good skincare regime is essential to assist makeup artists in their work. For those clients whose skin is stressed and needing treatment, what products would you recommend for a quick fix when you have a client / actor in the chair?
KR: The best way to give skin an instant boost is to brighten and hydrate. One of our best-selling products is our Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture (£60). It is a super-rich but non-greasy moisturiser that leaves skin looking and feeling so smooth. We developed advanced Hyaluronic Acid technology which enhances skin’s ability to attract and retain water deep within its surface, meaning you feel the benefit of the hydration all day long.
To brighten I’d recommend our new Rapid Age Spot Correcting Serum (£70), which is clinically proven to rapidly diminish the appearance of dark spots, age spots and hyperpigmentation. Not only is this great protection but the formula also has a beautiful pearlescent finish which gives skin a beautiful glow.
For a quick fix, I also really love our Rapid Resurfacing Peel wipes (£35). They are single use extra-strength peel wipes which help to reverse signs of ageing and detoxify the skin and contain a powerful blend of 10% Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C to instantly retexturise skin, enhance radiance and even out skin tone. They can be used one or twice a week or for a quick skin pick me up ahead of an awards event.
WP: What’s the next big beauty trend?
KR: Nowadays wellness is at the fore front of people’s minds, self-care is vital and ties in with Dr Murad’s Connected Beauty philosophy that I try to live by. It’s important to be kind to our minds and try to manage our stress levels. Take time for yourself and awaken your body with exercise, even if it’s a relaxing meditation class, nourishing your skin with great skincare and finally Eat Your Water by consuming a balanced diet centred on nutritious, water-rich foods to fortify cellular hydration. All of these principles will keep our skin looking its best and more and more people are realising this now. At Murad we really believe that the key to looking good is cutting-edge product formulations, connect with positive physical and mental lifestyle practices and treating skin to regular professional treatments like facials to really look after ourselves.
