With book season in full flow, we were very excited when this title arrived at Warpaint Towers for review. Dany Sanz, Founder and Artistic Director of MAKE UP FOR EVER, has unveiled her first make-up book, Life Is a Stage. In close collaboration with the superb Ellen von Unwerth and Dany’s closest tribe of artists, it brings life to 27 characters and 72 photographs inspired by all stages, and is a reflection of her lifetime work to create high performance products for stage and make-up artists across the globe.
Visually stunning, the book is packed with shots that you’ll wish to frame on every page and truly showcases the talent behind the brand. Each character presented hails from a different stage and tells a unique story from Dany’s artistic journey. One such character is The Blue Acrobat, a female trapeze artist who graces the cover, and symbolises the pro stage performer. Since 1984, Dany has created products to answer their needs.
“I knew about the extreme conditions that professional artists could experience and I knew how to translate this knowledge into products they could use,” she explains. “I see art as a form of movement, which is why I chose to paint bodies, rather than canvas, and sculpt faces rather than clay. This book is an illustration of my own creative process.”
The book comes complete as an exclusive box set including the Dany’s sketchbook, with her 48 sketches that correspond to the 27 characters, and allows you a glimpse into her creative mindset. Distributed by RIZZOLI Edition, Life Is a Stage is available in Europe now and worldwide from February 2018 RRP £50 in bookstores and MAKE UP FOR EVER boutiques.
