Elements; the Art of Makeup by Yasmin Heinz is the kind of make-up book that is guaranteed to inspire and delight. Created from her curated archive of work over the last decade, it’s filled with stunning imagery and scattered with the famous faces that she’s worked on. Her background in fashion and art is abundantly obvious, and her pages are collected into the four elements – Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
Now based in London’s East End, Yasmin was born in the countryside of Northern Germany into a creative family learning make-up and colour from an early age. She initially intended to follow her ballet dancer mother into the business until injury lead her to take a different path in life, and she found herself in New York working in make-up with Linda Mason and shooting with top photographers. High fashion took her to Paris and eventually to London, though her workshops run around the world, and she continues to collaborate editorially. Her work is at the cutting edge of beauty and fashion, from photo shoots to runway shows, music videos to advertising. She’s in demand from photographers, celebrities and designers alike and the images in this book reveal her extraordinary skill – whether adding contour to a face or completely transforming another.
Elements came about through one of these collaborations – Felix Lammers is Art Director – and is so much more than a coffee table book. The 208 pages are packed full of 180 images from intricate beauty to high fashion and set a big challenge in the editing.
“I think I had a couple of nervous breakdowns during the process,” admits Heinz. “Deciding which images fitted into which element, as every image tells a story. I was so happy that everyone gave their permission for the work to be used.”
Yasmin has collaborated with Alexander McQueen, Azzedine Alaia, Chanel, Comme des Garçons, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Kenzo, Sonja Rykiel, Thierry Mugler, Victoria’s Secrets and Dame Vivienne Westwood. Celebrities include Alex Wek, Anja Rubik, Behati Prinsloo, Bhumika Arora, Carla Bruni, Charlotte Gainsbourg, David Gandy, Diane Kruger, Dita von Teese, Erin O’Connor, Eva Herzigova, Lilly Cole, Oona Chaplin, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Stella Tennant and Suki Waterhouse. In the pages of Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, Glamour, Wonderland, Purple and ID, she has worked with Annie Leibovitz, Ellen von Unwerth, Felix Lammers, Rankin, Sandrine and Michael, amongst many others.
Published by Prestel.co.uk, it’s priced at £45 and is available this week from Waterstones, Foyles and leading bookshops. You will find it here.
