Things are revving up for the Warpaint Ireland Championships at the forthcoming Professional Beauty Ireland show and we’ve assembled a talented panel of judges to put the contestants through their paces.
With a background in Fine Art, Maria Malone-Guerbaa trained at CMBA before working in film, TV and theatre, until a chance request to help with facepainting at her kids’ schools and she fell in love with the new canvas. The rest, as they say, is history – and her 200k Instagram followers can’t get enough of her work. With a global reach, Maria’s a regular in the media, juggling demoing and teaching with collaborations with many cosmetic companies.
Paddy McGurgan is one of the UK’s leading make-up artists with the ability to create the most soft and sophisticated make-up to the most creative and expressive style of artistry whilst always capturing the true beauty of the subject. Starting first on make-up counters including Laura Mercier, MAC, NARS and Stila, Paddy handpicked several of the brands’ signature techniques and at the same time, creating his own unique style of artistry. Paddy then started working as a freelance make-up artist for over 10 years and has added invaluable techniques to his skills by being awarded numerous awards including Illamasqua Distinction of Make-Up Artistry, European Creative Make-Up Artist Of The Year and quadruple Wedding Journal Bridal Make-Up Artist Of The Year.
In 2012, Paddy opened his first Make Up Pro Store that brought together professional make-up brands such as Make Up For Ever and Make Up Atelier with social media brands such as Lime Crime and Sugarpill under one roof. Make Up Pro Store is now in its fifth year and is continuing to grow and has two additional stores open across Northern Ireland. Paddy believes that good education supports his own ethos that as a make-up artist, you do not stop learning and being the director of his own Make Up Academy Paddy has assisted in training a new generation of talented artists with many international artists teaching alongside him. Paddy also believes that to educate is to elevate and it is his constant need to retrain, evolve and develop that created a Make Up Centre of Excellence within the UK and ROI as Paddy and his team continue to go to strength to strength.
Róisín has been working in the beauty industry for over 15 years. After working in some of Ireland’s most prestigious salons and spas including the Monart Destiniation Spa, Róisín decided to further her career and become a tutor in the field. After years of furthering her make-up skills, Róisín opened her own Beauty Training College called Gorey Institute of Beauty and it is there that Róisín and fellow tutors have produced many successful make-up artists in the industry.
Róisín has also become a tutor for Airbase Makeup, the most prestigious airbrush make-up brand and work on huge TV productions including X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing and Róisín now is the sole Irish distribution of Airbase Makeup. She also has a custom salon in Gorey called The Makeup Studio which provides make-up to the public and working with TV studios and larger productions with the Airbase Ireland Pro Team. Róisín stated, “I’m so looking forward to judging at the Warpaint Makeup Competition this year and seeing what Ireland’s make-up artists have to offer.”
Make-up artist and entrepreneur Debbie McQuillan has over a decade of experience within the make-up industry. As the director of Ireland’s top make-up academy VanityX, Debbie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. As a brand, VanityX has The Makeup Room, The Blow Dry Bar, Bridal Vanity who are teams of professional teams in make-up artistry, hair styling and bridal. VanityX also has its own blog called A Touch Of Vanity. VanityX also launched its first line of make-up, brushes and false eyelashes in 2015.
Nuala Campbell is a professional make-up artist and the managing director of Titanic Creative Management and Titanic FX. Following from a freelance career as a fashion, beauty and SFX make-up artist for 10 years, Nuala has worked on some of the greatest fashion week shows in Paris, London, Milan and Tokyo and has been published in many magazines including Vogue.
In 2014, Nuala started a new journey by opening Titanic Creative Management which is the leading training academy for prosthetics, SFX make-up and props and wig making in Northern Ireland. It is also the only management company in Northern Ireland for artists working in TV, Film and Theatre. Last year, Nuala then went on to open a retail company called Titanic FX which imports and exports a range of professional make-up effects products and has gone on to manufacture and export Nuala’s own products around the world to the film and make-up industries.
Nuala has also got many business awards under her belt including Winner of the Belfast Chamber of Commerce Award and the Aer Lingus Viscount Awards in the prestigious Pall Mall. Nuala has also been voted one of Northern Ireland’s Most Inspirational Women in 2016 by Business First Magazine.
Make Up For Ever’s Irish Creative Director Annie Gribbin is Ireland’s leading award winning, beauty entrepreneur, and is recognised as a pioneer in the industry, with over 30 years experience. Having worked internationally with A-list celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bono, Lulu and George Clooney, she is now passionate about sharing her knowledge and her skills through her Dublin-based makeup academy.
With a line-up of judges like this, it’s going to be a fantastic competition.
