The dichotomy of British Summertime – fluctuating between hurricane-level rainstorms and bright sunshine – has us dreaming of tropical shores where we don’t need to wield a brolly in fear of a sudden downpour. Since we’re suspiciously missing a plane ticket to the Caribbean, we’re going tropical with our make-up instead.
Dolce & Gabbana’s Tropical Spring collection started our colourful daydreams months ago. This limited collection captures the punchy, fun colours which illustrated their S/S17 clothes perfectly. Our top pick would be the Passion Duo Lipstick in Tropical (£30), which they seem to have added to their permanent roster past the end of the season. The pink core to the red-orange coral gives such a juicy, irresistible look to lips.
MAC’s summer collection, Fruity Juicy, looks set to continue the mouth-watering trend begun by Dolce & Gabbana. Transport yourself to the beach by applying these beautiful shades of tan, aqua and hot pink. Top of our list is the surprisingly wearable ‘Shake Shake Shake’ lipglass (£18) and the eyeshadow palettes.
The Tropic Heat collection by KIKO is full of interesting products – while the chubby cheek/lip colours are very versatile and handy to keep on hand we found ourselves reaching for the Dewy Stick (£7.90). We can imagine this coming in very handy on shoots, mimicking a sexy slickness and gleam as opposed to a humid hot mess. The translucent formula will work on all skin tones and can be used on cheeks, collarbones, legs – you name it.
Turn up the heat with the newly announced Urban Decay Naked Heat palette (coming 30th June, £43). Their most daring addition to the Naked series, Heat lives up to its name by delivering warm tans, coppers and sunset rouge shades – we have our eye on the shades Scorched and Ember. Complete the sultry, simmering look with the additional Eye Pencils and new Lipsticks.
Pale washes and graphic slashes of colour across the eye ruled the runway for SS17. Mimic Victoria Beckham’s vivid cobalt with NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Rated R (£25) – not only is the cobalt a stunner, but the lime green it’s paired with is perfect for a tropical twist – or a bold hibiscus ‘blush bomb’ as seen at Kenzo with Ambient Lighting Blush in Luminous Flush by Hourglass (£32).
A splash of vivid red can be as welcome as a cocktail on a hot day, pairing brilliantly with effortless bronzed skin. This summer we’re reaching for NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Morocco (£6) for the perfect orange-red lip – these are easily one of our favourite matte formulas – and YSL Rouge Pur Couture No. 1 Le Rouge Lipstick (£27) for that classic blue-toned red.
A flush of bronze and healthy blush is essential for any summer look inspired by the tropics. Clarins Sunkissed Collection’s Bronzer (£30) contains three graduating shades as well as a pop of orangey-coral blush to perk up cheeks. Guerlain is always always on point with their annual bronzer updates and this year is no exception – the Terracotta Sun Trio (£36) will not disappoint. Chanel’s Cruise collection has offered up one of our favourite blushes or the season: Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour Stick (£34) is fool proof. The shade selection is excellent, soft yet pigmented pops of colour to leave cheeks perfectly flushed, as if you’ve been dancing all night at Club Tropicana.
