Education maven Julia Townend is back, continuing her Get Trained series with us to help you make informed decisions on which course or college might suit you best.  Her latest adventure took her to London and a look at the The Session School.

During the summer I visited The Session School based in a studio in North London on the Hornsey Road.  This is a boutique-styled make-up school focusing on courses in fashion and bridal make-up.  The School is owned by Dani Guinsberg, a highly respected and well established MUA working in the fashion and editorial industries.

The courses are aimed at the fashion industries where Dani and her team of tutors offer a wealth of industry experience spanning many years between them.  This provides the student an unrivalled opportunity of being taught by industry-based artists and learning from some of the best around.  The courses are aimed at beginner and advanced levels to suit the student’s requirements.  All courses are listed on the website and supporting information about the team, with a wide range of courses on offer.

On the day I visited The Session School the students were being taught by Amanda Bell, and I joined the group while they were practising on each other.  The students were working on their chosen designs but were comfortable to ask Amanda for guidance when needed.  Observing the session I felt there was a good rapport and Amanda interacted well with each student.  The sessions are very hands-on and students are introduced a wide range of products available for them to use in sessions.  I was impressed that students are also encouraged to test out various ranges of skin care which are also available for them to use. There was a great atmosphere in the room and I could see that the students were enjoying their course.

There is one main classroom area, fitted out with mirrors, work area and chairs.  Additionally there is an area for photographic shoots so that the students are able to record their work.  On completion of studies, Dani offers a good range of support for her graduates.

I spoke to Dani to gain more insight into the opportunities at The Session School.

What is the unique selling point of The Session School?

I guess our USP is definitely the fact that we are a small boutique school, plus we really care about our students and their success going forward.  There are three teachers in my team who have remained faithful to The Session School with their passion for teaching, and the environment we have created is rather family-like.  Students pick up on this the day they start with us and are generally unwilling to leave on the last day.  There have even been tears!

The students go on to become fashion/media hair and make-up artists, or set up their own bridal make-up companies with a very high success rate.

Are Student kits included for the courses?

Kits are included on our Bridal and Pro Make-up Courses.  They are not included on our advanced courses as these students have previously trained and are furthering their skills.

What products are available for the students?

We hold products for use at the school from every imaginable brand, such as Chanel, Dior, Illamasqua, MAC, DHC.  The list is endless as many high-end brands have donated products for us to demo with.  The kits given are mainly Illamasqua, DHC, Bella Pierre, Freedom and Ben Nye.

What are your aims for the courses?

Our aim is always to train students to the highest level, be it in bridal or fashion techniques.  We look to help guide students to develop their own natural styles whilst sticking to a very strict hygiene standards with the best practise for working in the industry.  We also make sure to keep classes small so that full attention can be given to each student.  We generally take a maximum of eight students per course.

The school is located in North London with good transport links.  For more information on the courses check out the school’s website www.thesessionschool.com.
