Beauty innovations from Korea have been taking the market by storm the last few years. The crazy sheet masques were all the rage last year, but for 2016 we saw the rise of the cushion foundation. Lancome were the first and since then other leading brands have followed suit, but why are they suddenly the must-have product? Is it just the overwhelming desire to create something slightly different? Or is it our Western obsession with all things Korean, who knows? But as a quick, easy and more importantly portable method of applying a base that gives a dewy and light coverage, cushions do the job. The best we’ve found are:
Being the first western brand to launch the cushion gives Lancôme an edge, but the product does stand up to scrutiny. It gives just as good coverage as a regular foundation but the cushion applicator means it’s applied it in half the time.
L’Oreal Paris Nude Magique Cushion Foundation £14.99
The first layer of this one is quite sheer but can be easily built up in key areas that need more coverage. Skin is left looking glowy and it lasts well throughout the day.
Topshop Air Cushion Skin Perfector, £16.50
This works as a base touch-up and the hydrating formula brightens and leaves a soft velvety finish, not too dewy, not too matte.
MAC Matchmaster Shade Intelligence Compact, £29.50
This liquid formula blends beautifully with the applicator. It’s lightweight and colour-corrects so eliminating the need for concealer.
Pur Air Perfection CC Cushion Foundation, £28
If you’re looking for the lightest of coverage this one’s for you, as it’s more of a tinted moisturiser and works well with targeted concealer. One bonus is you get a free refill included.
Kiko’s CC Cream Cushion System £15.50
Has a really good shade choice and gives a dewy, but ungreasy, look.
Givenchy TEINT Couture Cushion Portable Fluid Foundation $50
With its high concentration of water, the fluid texture plumps, corrects and evens out the skin. At the moment, UK purchasers can only get it via Sephora on mail order, but watch this space.
