In five weeks time, Warpaint Magazine and the United Make-up Artists Expo will be joining forces once more, along with Make-Up Designory, for a make-up competition unlike any we have ever hosted.  Ideal for film and TV students looking to stretch themselves, we have a unique genderbending and ageing make-up competitionwhere contestants will be required to age their chosen female model into a male character in excess of 60 years of age.

This competition is an international student competition designed to challenge a make-up effects artist in the detailed and timeless skill of ageing, with the inclusion of gender transformation of a model.  The make-up artist will be required to apply hand-made prosthetics and employ the make-up techniques required to age a young female model to appear as an elderly male character.  All wigs and additional pieces to be pre-set before arrival.  The pre-set will be judged as part of the competition.

Objectives

The competition participant will provide professional prosthetics, incorporating hand laid hair techniques, to age a model and change their gender appearance from female to male.  The participant will provide a female model within an age range of 25-30 years old.  The competition participant will successfully transform the female model to an aged male character, in excess of 60 years old.

Criteria/Variables

Eligible applicants will be current students or graduates of a recognised make-up school or training program.  Eligible graduates will have completed their program within two years of the competition date.  Each entrant must be over 16 years of age on the date of the competition.  Each applicant will submit a completed application form by email to emma@warpaintmag.com by no later than 23:59 Friday April 8th 2016 and MUST provide contact details for themselves and their tutor (if still studying) – successful applicants will be notified by email by Friday April 15th 2016

Each applicant will be required to submit three photos (maximum of 2mb per file) illustrating the quality and expertise of their prosthetic make-up application skills.

Tasks/Work

Prosthetic applications will be judged according to a scoring rubric in the categories that will address prosthetic fit and application, appliance edge work, base tones and matches, highlights and shadows, texturing and painting techniques, hand laid facial hair work and the overall impact and development of the character.  Hand applied loose hair will be a required element in the final character.  Participant may use the loose hair to create body or facial hair such as moustaches, beards, sideburns, eyebrows or hair atop the head.

Inclusions

Selected competition participants must provide:

• Proof of Admission: e-Ticket purchase (ticket number to be included on submission form) – MODELS do NOT require a ticket on competition day.  However the chosen participating contestant’s one day ticket purchase will cover Saturday admission also.
• Female model, age 25-30 years old
• Professional make-up kit, including all products and tools necessary to meet your objective
• Age prosthetics, that may either be purchased generic or custom-made for your model
• Wardrobe, wigs or accessories associated to create the developed character
• Current headshot photo of your female model, 8”x10” required for judging
• Brief paragraph describing the backstory of the developed character

UMAe will provide:

• Mirrored workstation with lights and electric
• Upright chair for model
• Waste basket
• UMAe free admission for model on day of competition

Exclusions

All applications will be reviewed and up to EIGHT competition participants will be selected to contend for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place positions and prize packages associated with the contest.  Eligible participants must review and consent to all competition rules and release requirements.  All make-up applications and painting will be conducted on-site at the competition location.

Timetable

Competition will be 4 hours in length to allow for the complete development of an aged male character.

10:00 > 10:30 Registration
10:30 > 10:50 Set up workstation including 5 mins briefing
10:50 > 14:50 Competition commences – makeup applied
14:50 > 15:10 Clear down and close out workstation
15:15 > 16:00 Judging
16:00 > 16:30 Sunday Awards Ceremony, presentation & photos
