There’s just something a bit magical about glitter.  The way it catches light, it seems to promise something special and is a staple of any self respecting night time party look.  Warpaint rounds up a selection of the best sparkly dusts out there.

You can’t help but be a little bit in love with glitter.  The slightest amount can lift a daytime look into something that draws moths to flames; such is the instant glamour that glitter can afford.

If you think glitter is only for the young then you’d be wrong.  These days you’ll find glitter in many different guises, from liquid eyeliner to mascara, lashes to hairspray, but there’s little doubt applying glitter isn’t necessarily for the novice.

Pure glitter comes in shaker style pots and requires something to base it on or something to set it in order to make it stay put.

Too Faced has Glitter Glue (£17) which is specifically formulated to lock-down glitter and enhance its reflective quality.  The colourless cream formula grabs and holds loose glitters, pigments and shimmers in place, insuring they won’t come off until you take them off.

Too Faced also market Glitter Glaze (£18) a sparkling top coat that can be worn two ways.  The starry-eyed formula can be layered over your favourite shadow for a brilliant flash of metallic colour or worn alone for an intense eye-catching shimmer.  When applied to skin Glitter Glaze dries instantly and glitter formula adheres on contact.

Glitter pretty comes in much two forms: pure glitter dust and glitter mixed with a translucent or pigmented cream base.  TopShop Beauty has however mixed the best of both with their Glitter Duos (£7).  The base is applied first followed by the glitter dust.  Available in silver and gold, these Glitter Eyes in Sprinkles are good value, functional, easy-to-use glitters.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics glitters (£9) offer micronised metallics that can be used on face, body and hair.  A wide variety of colours are available though our faves are a silvery Mirror Ball, black diamond Baylock or a regal purple in Fae.  OCC advise it’s applied over the OCC Skin Primer for longevity.

Glamour Dust (£14) from Too Faced is a new generation of glitter that combines loose pigment powder with glitter and a good selection of shades.  Designed to be used with the Glue and Top Coat, this dust can be used a little or a lot and with the glue as a separate application, easy to place and correct.

M·A·C Pressed Pigments glitter eye shadows use advanced technology to embed the glitter into the colour.  Now in nine sophisticated new shades, go bold with the rich, blue colour of Vanilla Diamond or glamorous in stunning Black Grape.  For a softer, luminous look try Pink Pepper or the glistening glow of Summer Honey.  They can be used two ways: apply dry for a shimmery-sheer effect, or wet for a dramatic, high-gloss finish.  For enhanced results, use with the 215 Medium Shader Brush.

MAC Pro Reflects

MAC Pro Reflects

The MAC Pro Reflects pure glitter shakers can be applied directly to the skin or combined with products to create high-level glitter and sparkle effects on all areas of the face, skin and hair.  Please note: Glitter is not eye safe and is not recommended for use on this area of the face.

Stargazer has plenty of High Street-priced glitter.  The Face and Body Gel Glitter (£3) is a new formulation face and body gel glitter that can be applied straight around the eyes, on the face.  The thin nozzle allows a very smooth application of the glitter to the skin available in nine shades.

Their Glitter Shaker works just like a salt shaker, and can be mixed with any make-up or even sprinkled over drying nail polish. Stargazer also has The UV Glitter Shakers and a new holographic loose glitter in a unique dispenser.

Urban Decay’s MoonDust feels like a cream but goes on like a powder to create a smooth, brilliantly reflective look.  Our favourite is the smoky black Zodiac with a blue-green shift and a sparkly 3-D effect.  Guaranteed there’s not a speck of chunky teen glitter to be found Moondust Eyeshadow is infused with a delicate, microfine sparkle and 3-D pearls.

Urban Decay

NARS Eye Paints have three glitters in the successful and popular Eye Paints collection. Snake Eyes, Tatar and Ubangi are brilliant pots of high-impact pigment in an innovative silky, weightless gel formula.  The rich, hyper-saturated shades glide smoothly and dry down quickly.

ILLUSION D’OMBRE de Chanel (£24) can be used to create an extreme, stylised look or simply to blend over the eyes with a veil of mother-of-pearl.  Gold, bronze and platinum reflections, mixed with the iridescent and luminous shades are a light and long-lasting powder-cream texture makes application easy.

Lancôme’s Hypnôse Ultra Dazzling Colours (£21) offer a very high concentration of pigment and sparkle within a waterproof mousse texture, which stays put for hours and remains ultra-comfortable all day long.  Highly intense but totally workable on application, its applicator brush allows you to create infinitely varied effects, from the thinnest colour veil to the boldest of smoky eyes.

Le Maquillage Pro Glitters (£7.50) from Precious About Make Up (PAM) come in every colour imaginable and are incredibly dense glitters, making them ideal for body work.  They’re also versatile enough to be mixed with make-up, body or hair products.

For just a soupçon of glitter you can’t go far wrong with Stila’s and YSL’s Baby Doll glitter eyeliners.

Inspired by Stila’s best-selling, award-winning Kitten eye shadow, the Kitten Glitter Eye Liner (£10) gives lids a touch of sparkle with a unique combination of glitter in champagne, rose gold, bronze, gold and pink.  For more intensity in the glitter and a more pigmented look, layer the glitter liner. Focus on the centre of the eyelids to make the eyes really pop.

YSL’s Glam Babydoll range includes the long-lasting shimmery eyeliner (£24) in sparkling gold.  The fine brush ensures precise contouring and a flawlessly even line with every application.

YSL

Nicolas Degennes, Givenchy Beauty’s Artistic Director, has created a must-have for Christmas.  Givenchy Lash Sparkles (£19) is a gold veil for lashes, coating them with subtle gold sparkles in just one stroke.  Apply over mascara.
