While the overall impression of the 87th Academy Awards themselves was a somewhat underwhelming ‘meh’, we did find glimmers of gold in the beauty looks among the masses. With the majority of attendees plumping for a smoky eye (of varying shades, which was good to see) and a nude lip, we’ve selected some of our favourite looks and the MUAs behind them.

Reese Witherspoon – make-up by Molly Stern

“I wanted Reese to look like she just came off a vacation,” Molly explained – the perfect choice for Reese’s off-the-shoulder gown which to complete the Riviera-chic feel. “I wanted her to have a radiant glow, like award show season had been a vacation for her.” Using neutrals with a defined edge, the look was equal parts sexy and relaxed to match the dress. “[Tom] Ford is the master of simple and elegant. I wanted her make-up to feel that way as well. I didn’t want there to be too much of anything that would take your eye away from the look as a whole.” Laura Mercier Silk Crème Moisturising Photo Edition Foundation created the perfect canvas, with Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate in ‘Intensity One’ giving colour and structure. The smoky nude eye was beautiful, and the look finished with the brightening Laura Mercier Smooth Lip Colour in ‘Peche.’

Scarlett Johansson – make-up by Mai Quynh

While opinion may have been split over Scarlett’s over-sized necklace, we were all in agreement over her modern take on sleek neutrals, perfectly matched to her shorter hair. Inspired by her gown, Mai echoed our observations, saying “I wanted to have the make-up look soft, polished and gorgeous without being too dramatic because the dress was such a statement. Also, it’s not what Scarlett’s about. She is less is more, when it comes to make-up.” Scarlett looks great with pinks and red on her generous mouth, and apparently the choice of Dolce & Gabbana Matte Lipstick in ‘Dolce Desire’ was her own idea. Mai paired it with D&G’s Luminous Cheek Colour Powder Blush in ‘20’, and a combination of Perfect Mono Intense Cream Eye Colour in ‘Nude 30’ and their Eyeshadow Duo in ‘Evocative 95.’

Julianne Moore – make-up by Elaine Offers

Using L’Oréal Paris products, Elaine gave winner Julianne a classic look with a subtle modern twist, using taupe and bronze on the eyes with a touch of plum. “We try not to repeat ourselves too much. [We] tried to go for more contrast, definition. It’s very glamourous, elegant and kind of modern.” The pinky tones of the surprisingly affordable L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche ‘La Palette Nude’ eyeshadows were applied using a damp brush for colour intensity and a lack of harsh lines. Keeping with the purple-pink tones, Elaine used Infallible Pro Lip Colour in ‘Raisin Revival.’

Jessica Chastain – make-up by Kristopher Buckle

Jessica never fails to disappoint on the red carpet, and this was no exception. We’re big fans of Kristofer’s work, and his ability to balance so many colours – her midnight blue dress, the red of her hair – against such pale skin is remarkable. More pared back than some of her other looks, Kristofer created a thick, winged eye using a chocolate brown shadow liner, topped with YSL Volume Mascara. “The eye is not too heavy-looking. We extended the corners a little bit. She felt like she should have an eye for today, and not so much a lip, and thought it would be better to keep it simple.” Said lip colour was from Kristopher’s own range of make-up, Always Flawless, in the shade ‘Nude Subdued.’

Rosamund Pike – make-up by Melanie Inglessis

Definitely in contention for our favourite dress, Rosamund’s rose-toned look was cohesive with the gentility of the lace on her dress without clashing with the vibrant red shade. “Rosamund can carry many looks. We try to make everything work together – the dress, make-up, hair… and attitude!” There was no doubt who had inspired the final look; “I wanted to create a classic beauty look [like] Grace Kelly.” The effortless look relied on natural-looking brows and lips – Melanie used Make Up For Ever Brow Seal Transparent Eyebrow Gel, and “for the perfect nude pout, I defined the lip with CHANEL Precision Lip Definer in ‘Beige Innocent’ and then filled in with CHANEL Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in ‘Mademoiselle’.”

Kerry Washington – make-up by Carola Gonzalez

As a Neutrogena brand ambassador, Kerry’s skin was (of course) flawless. But it was her amazing fluttery lashes which caught our attention. Carola kept the rest of the eye gently smoky with the Neutrogena Long Wear Nourishing Eyeshadow palette in ‘Cocoa Mauve’. “I added Velour fake lashes, ‘Complete Me’, to lift the eye and applied a few coats of mascara to her upper and lower lashes with Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara in ‘Carbon Black’. Simply stunning!

Lupita Nyong’o – make-up by Nick Barose

Lupita’s stunning turns on the red carpet last year saw her getting snapped up as Lancôme’s latest spokesmodel, so we were unsurprised to see that Nick had worked wonders again this year. With the brightness of her pearly dress against her skin, Nick decided against a bright colour pop and instead tonally tied the look together. Hey icy metallic eye was complemented by glossy, almost coppery lips, created using Lancôme Le Lipstique Lip Coloring Stick in Sheer Chocolate and L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Aubergine Velvet.

Margot Robbie – make-up by Tyron Macchausen

While Dakota Johnson’s CHANEL red lips are getting a lot of love, we’re naming Margot’s brilliant red-orange hue as our favourite, popping against her pale hair and dark dress. To ensure a long-lasting pout, Tyron used Hourglass Opaque Rouge in the shade ‘Raven’, as well as the matching lip liner. Gorgeous stuff.
