Our feeds here at Warpaint have been alive this weekend with stunning images from Kryolan’s Global Face Art Event. Held this year in Dubai from the 4th-6th May, it brought together the biggest and most important names in global make-up artistry to showcase the very best in beauty, fashion, theatre, TV & film and SFX at the Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre.
Oscar & BAFTA-nominated artists and MUAs that have created some of the most memorable movie SFX moments in recent history rubbed shoulders and traded tips with make-up experts that lead the field in fashion, catwalk and advertising. The line-up was international, but right there with the best of the best was our very own talent from the UK, including Paul Merchant, Gemma Horner, Joey Bevan, Stephen Murphy, Daniel Parker and Lan Nguyen-Grealis.
Visitors to GFA2014 also got to see an exclusive appearance from the winner of SFX reality show Face Off, Rashaad Santiago, who demonstrated one of the breathtaking creations which secured his winning place.
The multitalented Kryolan Professional MUAs, including the exceptional creative director Jos Brands and the Kryolan London team, shared the brand’s latest groundbreaking products and shades, as well as newly developed trends, techniques and applications.
Opening the event was The Royal Opera House’s resident MUA Hyewon Ahn, who demonstrated Character Make-up for Theatre. With over 12 years’ experience in make-up, bodypainting, wig-design and special effects for TV, theatre, film, photography and fashion, Hyewon is now one of the leading names on the worldwide opera circuit. After earning a BA in Costume, Technical Effects and Make-up for the Performing Arts at the London College of Fashion, Hyewon’s talent gained her a finalist place in the 2007 BBC Vision Design Competition for Make-up, and she went on to scoop the title of 2012 World Champion at the International Bodypainting Festival in Asia.
Kryolan’s Belgium maestro, Jos Brands, was exceptional in his use of airbrush, demonstrating a fusion of HD and Pastel Gothic. In charge of the Kryolan International Make-up Team for more than ten years, Jos conducts seminars around the world involving airbrushing, bodypainting and high-definition make-up. His development of a comprehensive pedagogical concept for the innovative techniques of high-definition make-up has literally changed the face of film and television make-up around the world.
Not one, but two demos from Lan Nguyen-Grealis: Inspiring Avant-Garde Make-up & European Beauty saw Lan’s style and technical ability which has earned her awards, credits and reputation worthy of a MUA who has worked in the industry twice as long. Lan is currently the youngest Golden Mask Award Winner 2013 for Make-up Art and National Professional Make-up Awards Winner 2011 for Best Studio Make-up and overall winner.
A taste of the Orient was Ahmad al Assir’s main influence with his make up demo. Ahmad trained in theatre and SFX make-up in his home country of Lebanon, but the lack of a film industry led him to focus his skills in the world of fashion, where he created unique make-up looks for some of the Middle East’s leading Arab magazines. During his ten years in the make-up industry, he has worked with some of the most important & well known Arab stars.
A strong British contingent was led by the Kryolan London team’s Paul Merchant, who alongside Gemma Horner predicted the trends and visions for make-up and the Kryolan brand for 2015.
Two stunning demos came courtesy of favourite ex-pat Sian Richards in the form of American Beauty and Camouflage meets Movie. While Siân resides in Los Angeles living out a dream career in all aspects of make-up, her origins are in fashion and beauty here in the UK, where she earned her stripes in a number of high-profile fashion and advertising campaigns.
A Reconstruction of the Original Phantom of the Opera was the challenge Stephen Murphy set himself for his time on stage. Having studied film at the Edinburgh College of Art, he quickly made the transition from filmmaking to special effects make-up artist when he secured a work experience role with Nick Dudman on The Mummy. Nick quickly spotted Stephen’s talent, which resulted in a ten-year stint for him alongside the SFX veteran on the entire Harry Potter series.
Last and by no means least, Joey Bevan’s Royal Fashion Show was the finale. Fashion stylist, designer and hair stylist Joey is an established name in the fashion and beauty industry, working alongside celebrities and clients on the international music and fashion scene. His experience of working with leading fashion houses, such as D&G and DIOR, coupled with a natural creative flair & an eye for design, has given Joey the ability to create and construct beautiful one-off garments that have featured on many fashion shoots, including Kryolan’s recent inspirational Make-up Is A Science 2014 calendar.
