Ol’ Blue Eyes

From cerulean to cobalt, there is only one colour to be seen sporting this season.  Blue eyes covered all four fashion weeks back in September, from a watercolour-like translucent wash of turquoise at Giorgio Armani to Marc by Marc Jacob’s vivid electric blue.  Warpaint did the rounds and came up with some of the best choices for embracing the blues this summer.

Dip your toes into the trend with a soft wash of a brightening cerulean or turquoise to start with.  Make Up For Ever Satiny Eyeshadow in Shade #150 (£11.50) is a lovely pearl-shot turquoise which instantly brightens the whites of the eyes or choose a palette with a range of shades to build up through, such as the Revlon ColorStay 16 Hour Eyeshadow Palettes (£7.99).  These quads of tonal shadows are a great way to experiment and try different shades for different skintones; the shade Serene has three graduated shades of blue and a brightening white.

Electric, unapologetic blues are the best way to make a real impact, and complement warming bronzes and peaches beautifully.  Use the Clarins Limited Edition Colours of Brazil Quartet and Eyeliner palette (£32) to create a gorgeous summer look with tan and peachy colours offset by a vivid royal blue liner.

KIKO make-up has also taken inspiration from Brazil for its Life in Rio collection this summer.  The KIKO Make Up Milano Creamy Touch Eyeshadow Duo (£9.90) in Shade 103 pairs a bright azure with a warm, dark cocoa in a double-ended creamy pencil which glides onto eyelids and is smudge-proof once set.

If you like the flexibility of pigments and loose shadows try Sleek’s Eyedust in Ooh Baby! (£2.99), a darkened baby blue, or MAC’s Pigment in Marine Ultra (£17) for a bold matte look.  Marine Ultra was the shade of MAC’s Chromaline (£14) used in the Kenzo A/W14 show, which shows that the blue trend is set to continue.

Embrace all things bright and beautiful with the Urban Decay Electric Palette (£38) which has three great vivid blues to play with.  Although intimidating in the pan, what better way to make an impression and really make the whites of your eyes pop?

If a full-on lid isn’t really the look you’re after, you could try Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Cobalt or pretty Periwinkle (£13) against jet black lashes or intense black liner, for a subtle but effective nod to the trend.  Alternatively, the By Terry French Riviera summer collection contains the gorgeously smooth Aqua-Print Eyeshadows (£23).  With a practical pencil form and an antioxidant-packed waterproof formula these shadows can be used all over the lid or pushed into the lash roots.  Shade No.5 ‘Blue Fiesta’ is the ultimate true blue shade.
