For today’s pro artist, standing out means going the extra mile whether through prepping, priming or finishing.  Warpaint finds the non negotiable products that will ensure your final looks are flawless.

The MUAs of today know that in order to stand out in a saturated market and make a name for yourself you need to be willing to go that extra mile.  Prepping, cleansing, priming and finishing your clients’ skin has become an expected step, whether male or female, a bridal client, model on an editorial shoot or actor.  Make-up has become expensive and without that ideal starting point the look you create can end up less than perfect.  The most requested MUAs know that their client may require some skincare help.  Here are the cult products which have earned their place in every kit.

PREP

Embryollise

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentre (£13)

This moisturiser has been around for 60 years and models worldwide count it as a beauty essential.  An intensely hydrating soothing cream, it is quickly absorbed nourishing skin leaving it smooth, supple and soft.  Only a small amount is needed if you are using as a moisturiser, while it can also be used as a mask by applying a slightly thicker layer and massaging in any remaining product after 20 minutes on the skin.  It is enriched with essential fatty acids and vitamins and the velvety finish grips foundation.  Suitable for all skin types including super sensitive, this one-size-fits-all lotion will leave your complexion soft, dewy & perfectly prepped for make-up.

Sisley Masks

Sisley’s mask range has gained cult status with MUAs the world over.  Emma White Turle who has been working in the fashion and television industry for 20 years and whose work has appeared in numerous publications says, “I love to use Sisley Black Rose mask on these areas whilst I am prepping the face for make-up.  It just gives that youth giving boost to the skin that is perfect for perfecting all skin.”

In fact there is much love for each mask in the Sisley range.  Top international catwalk MUA Alex Babsky loves the Radiant Glow Express Mask, “It’s a super reliable way to get below-par skin looking good, fast,” explains Alex.  “Use it to rev up tired skin and get it glowing in a flash.”

And finally for the Flower Gel Mask, fashion artist Yvette Redmond sings its praises particularly for travel, “This gorgeous gel hydrates and calms the face, so that you disembark moisturised and glowing.”

We give you the lowdown on each one.

SISLEY BLACK ROSE MASK HIGH RES

Black Rose Cream Mask (£93)

The perfect skin pick me up, this is ideal for those clients who sit in front of you with a tired, drawn and sallow complexion.  Apply a generous layer to the face and neck, leave for 10-15 minutes, then wipe away excess.  It is rich in active anti-ageing ingredients including Black Rose, Padina Pavonica and Alkekengi Calyx extracts and gets to work quickly on signs of fatigue to rejuvenate skin and restore vitality.  The creamy mask plumps and smoothes skin for a refreshed luminosity.

Sisley Flower Gel Mask

Express Flower Gel Mask (£77.50)

This cream-gel mask can be used in just three minutes, great for when you are right up against the clock on a shoot.  Toning and hydrating, the Express Flower Gel Mask has a high concentration of regenerating lily and iris extracts to firm the features and even the complexion.  Skin is silkier, brighter and energised.

SISLEY RADIANT GLOW EXPRESS MASK WITH RED CLAY INTENSIVE FORMULA HIGH RES

Radiant Glow Express Mask (£71)

For a quick beauty boost, this gently cleanses the skin’s surface to provide radiance and clarity.  Apply a thick layer and allow to remain on the skin for three to five minutes then rinse thoroughly with warm water.  Great for oily skins, the highly absorbent power of the red and white clays  combined with botanical extracts of Carrot, Red Vine and Rose-hip reduce excess sebum.  The ingredients tone, revitalise and protect while Rosemary and Chamomile essential oils help eliminate impurities that dull the complexion.  The non-drying texture doesn’t leave skin tight making it great for those with rosacea or easily irritated skin.

WELEDA SKINFOOD_75ML[TUBE]EN

Weleda Skin Food (£9.95)

Anyone that comes to you with dry facial areas or extremely dehydrated skin then the aptly named Skin Food from Weleda is a true hero product.  Delicately fragranced with essential oils including sweet orange and lavandulae, this is a regular behind the scenes at Fashion Week.  Originally created in 1926, the deeply-penetrating balm like texture with organic sunflower seed oil, chamomile, calendula and revitalising rosemary ensures lacklustre skin gets a boost.  Countless celebrities and models also use this great rescue remedy as a mask for undernourished skin.

Bioderma Sensibo

Bioderma Sensibio H2O (£4.99, 100ml / £9.99, 250ml)

The first and most popular micellar solution, Bioderma has gained worldwide cult status with one bottle sold every five seconds across the globe.  This ultra-mild cleansing formula can remove make-up multiple times before and throughout shoots without aggravating skin.  Suitable for eyes too, this three-in-one cleansing water leaves skin soothed and refreshed without drawing out moisture.  Both thorough and gentle, this clear, odourless fluid is a staple for make-up artists, models and celebrities alike.

PRIME

DrLipp Product Shot Box 2013 02

Dr Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips (£11.50)

Supermodels Jourdan Dunn and Eva Herzigova are fans of this multi-tasking SOS balm.  It reduces skin roughness by up to 40% in just one hour, thanks to the medical grade lanolin which is extremely nourishing.  Celebrity MUA Liz Pugh hails it as “a miracle balm” and it’s no wonder as it was originally developed as a nipple balm for breast feeding women so it’s hypoallergenic and 100% natural.  A small amount goes a long way, brilliant for when you need that lip product to go on smoothly.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream FF - high res

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Skin Protectant Fragrance Free (£26)

A legendary skincare classic, it is now available in a fragrance free formula, which is a first since the balm was created over 84 years ago.  Celebrities, make-up artists, models and beauty experts all agree that Eight Hour® Cream is a beauty must have because it soothes dry skin and provides anti-inflammatory benefits.  Created in 1930 by Miss Elizabeth Arden to soothe and protect skin, it was an instant and overwhelming success.  The ultimate multi-tasker, like the original, it works on limitless grievances including eyebrows, cuticles, and sunburnt skin or is perfect as a gloss on eyelids, lashes and cheeks and even to add a sheen to hairstyles.

HOMEOPLASMINE_LABORATORIES BIRON_ON BEAUTYMART

Homeoplasmine (£6)

Homeoplasmine soothes any kind of irritation due to the homeopathic blend of Calendula, Phytolacca (used by native American Indians), Bryony and Benzoic helping to trigger the body’s own healing processes.  Fabulous under matte lip products the waxy aquaphor-like balm is the French pharmacy’s answer to Chapstick.  Apply before make-up to plump up the lips, or use on dry patches for immediate and long-term soothing.

Dr.PAWPAW-highres

Dr Paw Paw (£8.95)

Since the MUA staple and Australian export Lucas PawPaw Ointment left our shores, we have been trying to find a replacement that is just as good.  With British brand Dr Paw Paw we have found something better.  This luscious soft buttery balm contains nutrient rich healing Carica Papaya (Pawpaw fruit) which adds moisture and aids skin repair.  Added ingredients Oleaea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil and Aloe Barbadenis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera) provide soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits for parched skin.

FINISH

PRTTY PEAUSHUN ON BEAUTYMART

PRTTY PEAUSHUN Skin Tight Body Lotion (£18.50)

Invented by MUA Bethany Karlyn whose list of celebrity clients reads like a who’s who of Hollywood, this luxurious body lotion actually improves the condition of the skin whilst concealing minor imperfections and enhancing definition.  That is thanks to the infusion of natural plant extracts including Arnica to diminish any bruising, Avocado oil for stretchmarks, inflammation reducing Green Tea and Blue Vervain Leaf to relieve aches and pains associated with exercise and stress.  Prtty Peashun is free from parabens, synthetic fragrances and toxic ingredients.  It has become the go-to body perfector for photo shoots and fashion shows as it promotes collagen, tones skin and leaves skin with a flattering finish.

Beautyblender Classic Single, new packaging

Beautyblender Classic (£16)

An award winner, highly recommended classic and go-to for famous faces including Beyoncé, Shakira and Oprah, you need this sponge in your kit.  Beautyblender was created without edges in order to eliminate any visible lines and streaks for foundation application.  Gently bounce the round base of the sponge against your client’s face for that seamless make-up look by feathering out the edges.  Then use the pointed end for those hard-to-reach areas like eyes, nose and mouth.  When wet it is normal for it to expand to nearly twice its original size.  Wash after use and place in the Beautyblender insert pedestal to dry.  Use it damp when applying wet or dry make-up because it minimises the Beautyblender’s absorption of product so that you use less product each and every application making your entire kit go further.  The Classic pink sponge is the one the Beautyblender range is best know for, although the sponges also come in a Professional Black and Pure White.

MAC ProLongWear-Concealer-NC15-rs

Mac Pro Longwear Concealer (£15.50)

When we quizzed our Warpaint Conference MUAs about their favourite products there was one that repeatedly came up, this lightweight fluid concealer.  It works great on under-eye circles and needs to be blended in quick with a small soft brush, but once it is it leaves a medium to full coverage with a natural matte finish.  The colour-true formula with hygienic pump dispenser, lasts up to 15 hours and has a wide selection of shades which can be mixed easily.
