The whirlwind of red carpet awards is almost done, and in the best traditions the stars save the best ‘til last with the 86th Academy Awards rolling into LA’s Dolby Theatre last weekend. As usual the MUAs behind the looks worked their socks off, but we spotted six distinctive trends to add to your skills whether you’re making up an A Lister or a blushing bride.
Orange is not the only red
The statement lip with its wide spectrum of red was on display, though with spring just round the corner, there was more than a hint of coral orange as an alternative to the nude lips seen at both BAFTAs and Golden Globes.
Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams sported an orange red, whereas Anna Kendrick, Naomi Watts, Karen O, Naomi Watts and Julie Deply were most definitely scarlet women.
On the Lash
The longer the lash, the bigger the star seemed to be the rule of thumb on Sunday. Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, Cate Blanchett and Emma Watson were all of a flutter.
Shimmer and Shine
With a break from the smoky eye both Jada Pinkett Smith and Lady Gaga matched the pastel gowns with peach purply shimmer shadow that made for a refreshing change.
Crop up top
Short hair is a risk for many performers, as it limits their possibilities, so we particularly love Jennifer Lawrence’s swept back short do. Charlize Theron always looks good with a boyish crop, she knows it, we know it and it was back for the OSCARS this year. Of course who can forget the impeccable host, Ellen Degeneres whose elfin crop suits her perfectly?
One sided relationship
The one sided do was most popular, best carried off by Sandra Bullock, Kate Hudson and Jessica Biel, all fortunately have the ears for it. The cascading curls over one shoulder was a statement look.
Mentioned in dispatches
Kerry Washington’s wine red lips perfectly complimented her olive skin, whereas Olivia Wilde’s stroke perfect French Flicks looked stunning. Penelope Cruz rocked a bronzed smoky eye courtesy of our own Charlotte Tilbury with a cool twist on the classic and Mrs McConaughey, Camila Alves, was just stunning in her very natural dewy skin. But the Award for the most dramatic look has to go to Margot Robbie, from blonde bombshell to raven-haired temptress.
