From midway mattes to lightweight creams, your choice of texture comes down to whether you want your colour to be deep or sheer.  Warpaint takes a look at the brands taking inspiration from unlikely places as lips get funky.

Over the past few seasons, texture has come to the forefront of lipstick formulations, changing the feeling of both editorial and runway looks, and their finishes have translated into the mainstream.  Lipstick looks are now based on the occasion and the amount of maintenance it is likely to need.  Instead of undertones, texture reigns supreme with many brands taking inspiration from luxury fabrics and everyday objects.  As a result, cosmetic players big and small are unveiling offerings that incorporate dense pigments, sophisticated finishes and hybrid formulas.  Warpaint takes a peek.

NYX Professional Xtreme Lip Cream (£7)

This is a great cream/gloss hybrid from NYX Cosmetics.  Available in 10 shades from red to nude, these rich cream colours deliver intense shine and colour pay-off with a silk like finish.  Not sticky or drying, this lasts for hours, guaranteeing a professional result at an affordable price.

Laura Mercier Lip Glacé (£18.50)

LM Lip Glace Baby Doll

These Lip Glacé’s come in a variety of coverage and finishes, and any skin tone is virtually enhanced by creating a subtle contrast in texture.  The sheer finishes apply smoothly without feathering or bleeding, creating the appearance of fuller lips.  High shine gives a transparent look while still imparting a dose of colour.

Revlon ColourStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick (£8.99)

This is a modern textured lipstick that keeps lips conditioned.  A semi-matte, soft formula with moisturising shea butter and aloe vera make this food and drink proof, perfect for red carpets, occasions and bridal alike.  It leaves a rich powder-like finish, which is comfortable and stays for up to 16 hours.

Illamasqua INTENSE LIPGLOSS in Stranger PLATINUM GOLD (£14.50)

ILLAMASQUA Intense Lipgloss - Stranger US COMPONENT

Usually metallic glosses need lipstick as a base to give the opaque finish needed to make lips pop, but Illamasqua has sidestepped this issue with this pigmented Intense Lipgloss in Platinum Gold.  Colour-rich with an injection of shine, it is an almost liquid lipstick texture, which brings the boldest reflective quality indicative of precious metals.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils (£18)

Nars 2457dragon_girl

Matte textures highlight every dry patch.  While colour lasts longest in drier lipstick formulations, you lose on suppleness.  NARS has managed to combine special emollients for a creamy texture with unique long-lasting velvety silicones for a new take on matte.  Colour is rich and seamless, and the convenience of the jumbo-sized pencil crayon makes it a great piece for any kit.

MUFE Rouge Artist Intense Satin Lipstick (£17.50)

Saturated pigments mean you get an intense hit of colour with these Make Up For Ever lipsticks.  Subtler than gloss, lips are hydrated and left with a pretty sheen.  Great for amped up natural lip colour.

Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss (£27)

Chantecaille Brilliant Gloss Pretty

Super high shine, this gloss has glass-like quality.  Highly reflective, an innovative system ensures long-lasting wear whilst microspheres of organic wheat protein-linked sugars plump up the pout.  This shade Pretty is high on our wishlist.

Bobbi Brown Lip Colour Shimmer Finish (£19)

BB High_Shimmer_Lip_Color_CMYK

Buttery and soft, this lip colour has a unique blend of pearls delivering a luminous finish that is incredibly wearable.  Shimmer can be hard to transfer to the lips successfully, so Bobbi Brown has packed this formula with luxurious Muru Muru butter and hydrating oils for multidimensional reflection.

Estee Lauder Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Lipstick (£24)

EL ENVIOUS Pure Color Envy

New from Estée Lauder, Pure Colour is a uniquely modern cream based lipstick packed full of Hyaluronic Acid dispensed through a Time Release Encapsulated Moisture delivery system.  High intensity colours from reds to corals, pinks to nudes hug the lips whilst still being lightweight and smooth.  Lips are moisturised consistently for up to six hours.  We particularly love the bright shades, which are densely pigmented.

KIKO Shine Lust Lip Tint (£9.90)

Kiko Shine Lust_magenta

KIKO has mixed the intensity of a stick, the hold of a tint and the shine of a gloss in their newest release.  One coat releases a sensual lacquered effect with a consistent wet gloss look.  The water-based gel-like formula means it is unexpectedly comfortable for the wearer and holds its colour-proof finish for eight to ten hours.

Tanya Burr by eyeCANDY lipgloss (£6.99)

TB Champagne Toast 3 (3)

Champagne Toast is the perfect name for this beige-apricot shimmer shade from YouTube MUA sensation Tanya Burr.  The sparkle suspended in this moisturising formula has a beautiful payoff that sits somewhere between glitter and metallic.  The texture is further highlighted by the gleaming pigmented finish.
