Warpaint is on the road this October with a foray up the M6 to Manchester for Professional Beauty North who will be hosting our Warpaint Conference this Autumn on Sunday 13th October 2013.
One of Warpaint’s goals is to give our readers the chance to meet some of the leading lights of the industry, watch them work, see their expertise in action and learn from them, whether that’s technique, career advice or insider tricks and tips.
With our show being hosted at Manchester Central, we felt it was important to feature homegrown MUA talent and our line-up reflects of some of the finest the North of England has to offer. Northern artists are showcased at Warpaint North.
Each week we’ll be profiling one of our speakers, this week meet Jackie Sweeney.
Jackie Sweeney is a master wigmaker for film and TV. After leaving art school, Jackie went to The London College of Fashion to study theatrical make-up in 1992. During her 2nd year she was working on The Phantom of the Opera and at The London & New York Wig Company where she continued to work once she graduated. On returning to Manchester, she worked on touring productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Miserables before joining Granada Television as a trainee make-up artist. She later went as a freelance make-up artist working on various productions including Last of the Summer Wine.
In 2004, she co-created Manchester based Wigs Up North with Liz Armstrong and Vicky Holmes. Today, the company combines wigs and make-up services from their premises in Ancoats, Manchester. Productions and clients such as Peter Kay, Shameless, The Royle Family, Cloud Atlas, CBBC and Theatre Clwyd have used the company’s wig making or hire services. Many private clients also use Wigs Up North to help them cope with hair loss. The make-up shop is a little treasure trove of make-up supplies and there is also a college kit service available. Jackie and her colleagues, Vicky and Liz, love teaching people who are passionate about learning so they run various courses and CPD training. They also offer production services providing expertise and people for numerous productions including SKY Sports, The RNCM and The Manchester International Festival whose shows this year included Macbeth with Sir Kenneth Brannagh and Alex Kingston.
Jackie will be demonstrating the pure art of wig-making, from creation to application and the techniques you need to be a master-wigmaker.
