We’re gearing up again for the Warpaint Championships, this time looking forward to London 2017 being held on 26th and 27th February at London’s ExCel Centre.  Never ones to stand still, we’re bringing you new and exciting additions to our competitions.

Taking place on Sunday 26th, we’re thrilled to announce WarPaintopia, our collaboration that debuts the legendary Paintopia Body Painting Festival onto the show floor of ExCel, and brings you three levels of entry to our competitions.  Our existing Solo Pro and Solo Student levels are for those competitors who wish to paint alone, while Professor’s Apprentice is a brand new category which pairs up experienced pros with newbie painters to create a mentored piece together.  Do note that entry for this category closes at the end of January to allow time for the pairs to plan their paint.  As entries for each category will be capped at 10, get your registrations in early to ensure your place.

Monday 27th will see Film & TV, Real Beauty and Runway competitors take to the floor.  For 2017 we’re making another change and student competitors will need to be studying for Level 3 or higher – or have graduated at this level within the last 12 months.

This year’s themes are:

Runway – 20th Century British Fashion Designers

Take inspiration from iconic British fashion designers from the last century and create an homage to the one you love the most.  Whether you’re transported to the ‘50s by Hardy Amies or the ‘90s with Alexander McQueen, this category asks you to capture the essence of their work, combining styling, nails, hair and make-up.  Remember that your finished look needs to work at a distance as well as close up.  Your accompanying Mood Board will storyboard your inspiration and vision.  You’ll be talking through this with the judges to walk them through your creation.  Both male and female models are permitted.  Style your model to complete your look, with carefully sourced clothing and great looking hair to reflect your creation.

Film & TV – The French Revolution

Contestants are required to design and make-up a character from the French Revolutionary period from 1789 to 1799.  This character can be male or female and suitable costume must be sourced.

Arguably one of the most important events in human history, the French nation descended into turmoil for a decade.  The Revolution overthrew the monarch, established a republic, experience violent periods of political unrest, and finally established a dictatorship under Napoleon Bonaparte.  Inspired by liberal and radical ideas, the Revolution altered the course of modern history, triggered the global decline of absolute monarchies and replaced them with republics and liberal democracies.  Every French citizen, whether rich or poor, had their lives affected.  King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette, their family and courtiers were thrown into prison, many aristocrats escaped in disguise into Europe or across the Channel to England, and violent mobs of peasants from both cities and countryside rampaged through the land.  Fashions for the rich before the Revolution were elaborate and opulent, and clothing and wig styles reflected this.  Your character will be living during this time.  Do your research well, and pay attention to the compulsory make-up elements in the Competition Pack.

Bodypainting – Love Is All Around

Our Bodypainting category is once again judged by two of the UK’s leading names – Jennie Roberts and Catriona Finlayson from Paintopia.  With a nod to St Valentine, the theme is Love is All Around and we’re looking for exceptional work, either brush and sponge or airbrush, combined with costume, headpiece and innovative use of props.  Again an inspiration board is required to be presented.

Real Beauty – Spring Wedding

1 model, 2 looks;  Section 1 – 90 minutes for daytime look.  Section 2 – 30 minutes for evening look.

Remember that the only prep you may do prior to the competition starting is nails.  You must do your hair and make-up from beginning to end in the time allotted.

This category is about creating a look for real women, not a professional model, and is judged on your ability to bring out the subject’s natural features, as well as application and technique.  Style her to perfection from top to toe.

Make sure you bring your Mood Board to show the inspiration for your work.  The theme this year allows you to showcase your transformation techniques and you are required to create two looks in the allotted time.  Your first look is for daytime and you have 90 minutes for this, after which your model will be photographed and you will then transform the make-up to an evening version using only FOUR products to change up the look.
